  I am just beginning. How can I start over with the blank site, getting rid of everything I have done so far?

  When I click on your address I’m taken straight to your blog posts page. It’s still empty. Just start posting words/images over-writing the sample posts and then continue with more at “Posts add new” and your site will begin to take shape. You have made another page showing in your menu that says “posts”. You have trashed that and it needs to be removed from the menu as I think that is where your confusion is.
