i can no longer edit galleries

what’s that, again? i’ve been trying for half an hour to remove one image from a gallery, and there is simply no way to do that, which used to take 15 seconds? what’s the deal, here?

oh, great – all i can do is add photos, but not remove them or move them. not a single week goes by without a glitch, now.

Hi there, Still using Sketch with the Classic Editor on your site?
I just flipped my demo site over to Sketch, created a new Page with the Classic Editor (not Classic Block), added a Gallery and was able to edit the Gallery in the Editor by clicking the pencil icon that appears above the Gallery when clicking on the Gallery in the Editor. Win10Pro on a PC with Firefox latest.
If you are creating/editing your Galleries differently, please describe your process.

Updating that I am also able to create and edit a Gallery within a Classic Block. The process is more or less the same as with the Classic Editor.
At this point, I might suggest working through the browser troubleshooting guide https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/ and if that doesn’t solve the issue for you, please come back here and post the OS and browser you’re using

hum, it made things even worse – the whole content of the post disappeared (that was 65 photos…) and an attempt at recovery tells me about “invalid content” ? i get an empty block, now…
i’m using chrome, updated. i get the same results with firefox.

My misunderstanding. I thought you were using one of the Classic features (Editor or Block). So it’s the Gallery block itself that is giving you trouble? I’ll go test in a minute.

… i don’t even have the option to upload some older version of the post to at least retrieve the photos. they’re lost. wow, wordpress.

i used to use “classic”, then last year, i had to switch every single post to “blocks” as nothing worked anymore. i don’t understand what’s going on, here. there is usually, indeed, a way to recover content. unavailable in that case.

no longer, after troubleshooting. i tried with other posts, and every post is like that. if i want to edit, instead of getting the little “arrows” to move the pics, or the cross to remove one, nothing appears, and the only remaining feature is “upload a photo”. “edit” just leads me to the media stock, where the “this post” option remains inactive. so it’s basically dead.

is there a way to download eight years worth of work before everything gets lost? it’s extremely dispiriting to see a whole website go to waste like that.

thank you for your help. i don’t want to sound bitter, but even though i’m not a “paying customer”, it’s depressing to work for years on something and then to get up one morning and find that you may have to start all over again… it took me weeks last year to convert all the posts to blocks, but this is even worse. “your files are already safe and secure on WordPress.com!” they should have been. :(

Do you mean you can’t export your site’s Media Library? It might be that it is very large and is timing out. Can you try using a different browser or connection?
Overall, for help with these issues, we might need to be patient and wait for Staff to reply here.

it IS very large, indeed – i started it in 2016 and accumulated a lot of material there. i tried with chrome and firefox, to no avail.
i’ll try to be patient, but considering the whole website has become potentially useless overnight, i’ll admit i’m feeling a bit nervous. thanks for answering, though.

Just want to chime in for when Staff are back and looking at it, that I am seeing the same thing (as noted by JustJennifer https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/i-can-no-longer-edit-galleries/#post-4067467). Does not seem to be a browser issue. Regularly use firefox, same behaviour trying in Edge and Chrome, and don’t seem to be able to re-order in jetpack app either on my phone.
But yes, the arrows to move images in a “Tiled Gallery” block seem to have vanished for me and the only way to try and change order is to delete images and re-add in the order I want. Is most definitely annoying and hopefully it is something that the Staff/Tech types can quickly track down a why and fix.

I’m having exactly the same problems.
Is anybody from WordPress replying to say what they’ve done (or what someone else has done) to cause this?
