I cancelled my domain because I want to transfer it to iPage to setup a wordpress.org site, should I

I cancelled my domain because I want to setup a wordpress.org site on iPage. I cancelled because I get a free domain with iPage. Is there an alternate route I should have taken? How long before the domain name will be available ? Will it be available again? Thank you.

Cancelled domains can be tricky. They can take weeks or months to appear again for registration. A better option would likely have been to change the name servers on the domain to point to iPage and eventually transfer the domain following the instructions here:

Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

That way, you could continue using the domain name without having to wait.

At this point, it looks like the domain is in the process of being deleted and made available again for registration. We have two options:

    1. I can reach out to the registrar to try to return the domain to your WordPress.com account and help you use it with iPage
    2. We can wait for it to become available again for registration. I’m thinking this will happen within the next one to two weeks, but I can’t guarantee that.

How would you like to move forward?

Thanks for the response. I like the idea of option one but that
Would mean I have to pay the $18+ any other fees to resurrect my cancelled domain. IPage gives me a free domain as part of the startup package and I’m not married to my current domain. Yes I would like to keep it but the world won’t stop rotating if I lose it. So unless I’m missing something I’ll wait patiently to see if I can get it again. Should I use whois to monitor its availability or some other service? Is there one direction as opposed to another you would advise me heading? Thanks for all your input.

If you’re not married to the domain and the world wouldn’t stop turning if you lost it, I’d would say you’re alright waiting for it to become available again. If we reclaimed it at WordPress.com, you would need to pay the $18 fee.

As for monitoring, I haven’t used a domain monitoring service so I can’t provide any recommendations. I generally just check WHOIS once a day to see when it becomes available:
