I cancelled my domain, I now realize I should've just transferred it. Is there any hope?

I was at traveldevoted.com on wordpress premium, I moved offsite to Bluehost. I got everything switched over, but was having trouble with my new posts showing up on the Reader on WordPress. It still only showed my posts from before I moved, even though it would give me updated stats and such on wordpress.com. Well today I thought it would be genius to cancel wordpress premium since I was no longer using it. Now my site is broken. If this at all makes sense to anyone, please help!

I see this post has been tagged for a staff member to assist. In the meantime, you may wish to review the information below.

Your domain’s nameservers are still pointing to WordPress.com, but they need to be changed to Bluehost.com. Here’s the guide for that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/

The other option, which you noted in your post, is to transfer the domain to Bluehost. To do that, follow these steps instead: https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/

Once the nameservers are sorted out, your posts should once again show in the Reader.

  • Hi there,

It looks like you not only cancelled Premium, you also cancelled your domain, traveldevoted.com, so you no longer own that domain. That is why your Bluehost site is no longer working.

On top of that you’ve also deleted the WordPress.com site to which all the upgrades were connected. To do this you would have had to click past several warnings that this is permanent and cannot be reversed.

There is no way to get back your deleted site, but it might still be possible to restore your domain. I have written to our registrar to try and get it back for you. I will let you know once I hear from them.

You will also need to create a new free site so I can link the domain with that site. If you don’t do this you won’t be able to access the domain’s DNS or to transfer the domain. Please use this link to create a new site. Select only a free domain and the free plan, and once our registrar restores the domain I’ll move the domain to the new site so you can manage it.

I realize it was boneheaded to do all of that. I should’ve just asked for help on the problem I was originally having, which was getting my new posts to show up in the reader.

It seemed like if people clicked on my profile from the wordpress reader or where I left a comment then they were being sent to the old site, no matter what I tried to do. But hopefully after this gets sorted out we can figure that one out.

  • Hi there,

Good news: Our registrar was able to restore your domain, and I’ve connected it to the new free blog you created. Your domain is again showing your Bluehost site.

It seemed like if people clicked on my profile from the wordpress reader or where I left a comment then they were being sent to the old site, no matter what I tried to do.

As you’ve deleted the old site there is no way to check on that now, but as you have Jetpack on the Bluehost site everything should work normally now. As the old site no longer exists only the Jetpack site should now appear in the Reader for people who are following it.
