I cannot export content from my WordPress.com blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi.
I have been trying to export for weeks if not months to export all content from my blog (elmundotech.wordpress.com aka elmundotech.com) to take it to a self-hosted WordPress.org account on DreamHost (to elmundotech.net). Every time I try, I keep getting the same message: “Goshdarnit! Something has gone wrong with our servers. It’s probably Matt’s fault. We’ve just been notified of the problem. Hopefully this should be fixed ASAP, so kindly reload in a minute and things should be back to normal.”

I believe my WP.com blog must exceed some maximum amount of data that just doesn’t let me export my blog.

    Please help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Have you tried breaking the export up by date or by category? That usually helps.

I can backup all the categories except the main one (with 3900+ posts). By both category and selecting a date, it works. By category alone, it doesn’t. Do I miss anything if I don’t select “All Content”? What I care about mainly are the blog posts, pages, images and comments.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, you will miss all the images and media. I’ll flag this and staff can make you an export file. With 3900 posts in that one category, it’s going to choke the exporter for sure if you do it yourself.

That’s not all. Each of the many posts have content in two languages (English and Spanish). Think of an actual newspaper article with content one side in each language in the same page. I still have to separate them but I first want to take the content to the new site to do it there, using WPML of course. Thanks.

  • Hi there – I’ve requested a manual export of your site from one of our developers, since your site is too large to use the self-serve tool. I’ll keep you posted here.

  • I’m sending you an email with your export – just let me know if you don’t receive it. Please confirm once you’ve grabbed the file so we can delete it at our end. Thanks!

    Thanks for your help.
I am now having problems uploading the file.

The memory was increased by DreamHost via PHP in order to handle content to be imported. The WXR XML file is 35MB big in order to import about 4GBs worth of content (mostly 98% JPG, PNG, GIF files).

The latest problem, the import gets stucked on
http://www.elmundotech.net/wp-admin/admin.php?import=wordpress&step=2 and I see “Whoopsie! That page can’t be found. It looks like nothing was found at this location. Maybe try one of the links below or a search?” when using my theme. This is the same message as “This is somewhat embarrassing, isn’t it? It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help” with TwentyTwelve.

I am using this to split the file: [http://www.rangerpretzel.com/content/view/20/1/]. At least with this I get to split the file and get past the first stage of importing, but when I get to “Download and import file attachments,” the import doesn’t work with the smaller (3MB or 4MB) files, whether I click or not on the checkbox about “file attachments.”

The only thing that seems to have been transferred: Tags. No blog posts.

    Please help me ASAP.

The people at DreamHost have made changes to PHP files, but I don’t know what to do next.

  • Hi there, for help importing your content into your self-hosted site, you might want to try asking for assistance over in the WordPress.org support forums:

    http://wordpress.org/support/

There are lots of knowledgeable volunteers over at the .org forums who are glad to help out with the self-hosted side of things.

Best of luck getting this sorted out!

    Hi.

After many, many tries, for many days, I have not been successful at importing the entire content of my WordPress.com blog to the new site, but one person at DreamHost recommends me to ask you for a .sql backup file of my blog to make that possible. Could you help me with that? Let me know. Thanks.

  • Hi there, we can only supply XML exports, not MySQL files. You might want to try breaking up your XML files into smaller pieces using one of the splitter tools available, such as this one for Windows:

I’ve tried that one software already since Sunday I think. Even after making them into small files, the import fails. It only works if I put three posts per XML file; I tried with 30 or 40 posts with their images (when dividing the XML per month), but I get an error [Service Temporarily Unavailable], and 95%+ of the images do not get imported. I would have to make 1330 xml files to transfer them all.

Also, when trying with that same software, it put the long list of tags in every XML file, adding about 2MB+ per file, even if I include only 200k worth. I removed the list of tags from all but one file. In that one file, in the one with three posts, it works.

Not sure what to do next.

  • Hi there – have you tried posting in the WordPress.org support forum? There are many helpful folks there who may have suggestions for you:

I have not tried there yet because the people at my current web hosting provider have been helpful except the last time I emailed them (no response yet after 60+ hours when they are supposed to reply in 24 hours or less) and I feel very disappointed by that and other things from them. I see HostGator offers I believe two ways to do the transfer, especially one for blogs or sites with lots of content from WordPress.com The people at HostGator simply needs the file I received thanks to you. I will do this later today.

  • Alright – good luck!

Update: The transfer is about to be done soon, but I will also need another similar XML file, one for http://elmundotech1.wordpress.com, in order to transfer about 150+ posts, but mainly images. Could you send me an WXR XML export file of my elmundotech1.wordpress.com blog? I’m thinking positively about meeting my new deadline which is due exactly next week, when my original blog ElMundoTech turns 5 years old.

  • Glad you’re getting closer! :-) I’ve requested a manual export of this site and will keep you posted here.

Update 2: HostGator had a problem doing the transfer on their own (even with access to my ElMundoTech WP blog), and have asked me to request an updated version of the WXR XML export file of http://elmundotech.wordpress.com.

“It appears that your blog at the source is quite large and when trying to go through the export step to export the XML file it timed out and reached a webpage unavailable. You will most likely need to contact wordpress support in order to gain a XML copy of your wordpress at elmundotech.wordpress.com.”

“I do highly suggesting asking them for a current XML . That way we have all your recent blog posts and media,” said the person in charge of the transfer.

Could you please provide me with an updated WXR XML export one?

  • I’ve made this request as well. Will let you know when both exports are ready.

Thanks. I hope I can get the files soon.
