I cannot get my old WordPress.com site to import into my new site.

When I try to export from my free WordPress page to my new one, I get stuck on a loading screen that eventually times out.
I followed all the steps for migrating and importing/exporting between the two, and I still have had no luck.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi,

So just to clarify, the issue is with the exporting FROM WordPress.com, not the importing into the new site? As in, you can’t even get the export file downloaded?

Hi, so I am able to export from wordpress.com the only issue I’m seeing is the export file size when I unzip the package is 2.9 MB which doesn’t make a lot of sense. It’s not a particularly large blog, but there is a lot of media and over 100 posts on there so the download files should be larger. When I go over to import it to Bluehost, it will get stuck in this loading screen and then eventually it just stops at the loading screen and will have a blank page.

I reached out to Bluehost Support and had a chat with them going, and they said that it was something on the wordpress.com because the file does not seem to be exporting the contents of the site itself. They told me to come over here and see if there was a way WordPress could send me a file of my blog contents so I can import it over on Bluehost.

I do have the WordPress type importer installed over there, so when I go to import it on the new site, there is an area down at the bottom that says WordPress and then you click the ‘run importer’ link so that it loads the file, but then it puts me at the loading screen and never actually imports anything.

  • So we’re on the same page about what is happening, are you following the instructions here?

Yes I have, still no luck.

I tried again thinking there was something with the connection and perhaps it resolved itself. It just gave me a different error message:

Sorry, there has been an error.
File is empty. Please upload something more substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini file or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.

  • Hi,

Regarding the size of the export file. This is normal as we don’t include any media files in it, just the location of those files. So, when you start the import, the WordPress Importer on your new site copies those media files from your WordPress.com site.

As for the error you’re getting, it’s related to your hosting configuration. If you contact Bluehost and give them the error, they should be able to make the needed adjustments to your hosting plan so that you can properly import your content.
