I cannot get the hit counter to come onto screen. How?

  As above – I do not understand the terminology used, perhaps, but I cannot get the “widget” to appear on screen.

  The Ryu theme hides widgets by default. You can see the current widgets by clicking the icon here:

  Then, you should see the Blog Stats widget in that drop-down area:
