I cannot laugh my WordPress blog.

I’m trying to launch my free WordPress blog since it’s for personal use, only to be used by a small group of people. Nobody in the group can access it but instead see – Coming Soon! I’ve hit a pay wall where it appears I MUST buy a domain that I do not need to share a blog with a group under 10 people. I was led to believe that if I used the dot WordPress.com in-site hosting, it would be free. Instead it looks like I have to pay $48 for the first year and it doubles on year two. I’ve searched for help on this issue and apparently I’m doing something wrong or WordPress has made this ‘free’ option close to impossible to find within their site. I’d like to simply find out if I’ve been misled or the ‘free WordPress.com’ launch or publish button has been cleverly hidden?

On the pricing page https://wordpress.com/pricing/ here is where you can find the free option

Hi @ryrhino00 The original poster’s site mentioned above has been launched and appears to be a free site. The pricing page you’re linking to is for people to sign up for a free website. Once they have signed up and created their site and then want to launch it to make it public, the flow is a little different. https://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings/#launch-your-site
During the launch process they might be asked to pick a domain, but they can still launch their site for free by following the free site prompts at the bottom of that page.
N.B. Image links you want to display here need to end in JPG, JPEG, PNG or GIF. The link you’re adding is a page link. If you look on that page you’ve linked to, you’ll see a link to MORE. Click it to get the image and embed links.

It’s the screen a site owner lands on after clicking “launch site” in Settings>General>Privacy>Launch Site. https://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings/#launch-your-site
There might be other ways to launch your site and arrive on that screen, but that’s how I did.
If your site has already been launched, you won’t see that.
