I cannot make an "About" page show up as a menu item

I somehow lost “About” being next to “Home” on the bottom of the header, & the custom menu instructions are not helping me restore/remake it.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you only want a home link and a link to your About page in the top menu, then you don’t need a custom menu: go to Appearance > Menus and make sure the blank option is selected in the Theme Locations pulldown.

I’ve done that, but it only makes the Home link show (I’m sure the About link disappearing was my fault, but I didn’t notice how or when). And I can’t find any way to get any options showing in the Pages box on App.>Menus – it just says none available, shows no checkboxes or anything like that.

When you said “placeholder draft”, I thought you meant a published page with some dummy text. Now I’m guessing you mean the page is a draft instead of a published page. If so, you need to publish it: drafts can’t show up in the menu.
