I cannot seem to get my chosen categories and sub-categories to show on frontend

  I am trying to add my categories to the front end screen. I elected the twenty eleven theme. I have created the categories and sub-categories on the back side, but cannot make them show up on the sidebar or anywhere else. Have I chosen the wrong theme or am I doing something wrong?

  The categories won’t actually display until they have at least one post assigned to them.
