I cannot separate my website from my blog site.
-
I am exhausted and frustrated. Not a tech person, and trying to have a separate blog site (seems to be working) and web site (cannot get the theme as displayed, keeps showing me how to ‘post’) and I’m going in circles. My web site is (email visible only to moderators and staff) and the blog site is tigermew.wordpress.com but the two items are blurring, and I cannot keep them separate. I need this for my work and WordPress was recommended by colleagues, and seemed easier than Wix or Weebly. Please help! Thank you.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. Sorry to hear you’re frustrated. Let’s see if we can help you figure this out.
First, if I search tigermew.wordpress.com I get a message that that site doesn’t exist. Did you perhaps mean https://tigermew54.wordpress.com/ ?
Second, you say above: “My web site is [email redacted]” As you can see, email addresses don’t display in the forum. We also need the URL, rather than the email address to help you. You link another site here, https://maryewambach.wordpress.com/, which appears to be empty. Is that the website you’re talking of?
Can you please clarify which sites you’re talking of, and then try and explain exactly what it is you want to do, i.e. do you want two different sites with different usernames? Do you want only one username, but two sites with separate content? The more information you can give about what you want to do, the better we’ll be able to help you get things the way you want them.

First – thank you so much for being so kind in your comments! I know I’m getting stuff wrong, and I do need to understand the exact URL addresses in order to do this. I apologize – I have a conference call and then a meeting – I’m a writer and not yet rich or successful enough to control my hours :-) I will get back on this this afternoon if that’s OK? But in general – yes – I want separate web site and blog, but the blog can be linked to the website. Thank you again!

No problem. Keep in mind I’m in a different time zone than you, so might not respond immediately. If another volunteer doesn’t respond, I’ll get back to you the moment I come online tomorrow.
But in general – yes – I want separate web site and blog, but the blog can be linked to the website.
May I ask why you want separate sites? Is it for personal vs business or rather two types of content, e.g. your author page that’s more for information purposes and mostly static, with a blog separate from that? If it’s the latter, I’d recommend you keep it on one site, but set the site up in a manner that the static website is front and centre. This will be better for you in terms of search engine rankings, as search engines index dynamic content (i.e. posts) much better than static websites.
But it’s up to you. If you want it completely separate you can do that as well.
To see how to set up a static website, read this support doc: https://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/
You can also see here for instructions to set up a static front page while displaying your blog posts on another page in the same blog: https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

I did read the support docs, and thanks! I think the blog needs to be separate, with the option to check it if desired. My web site is primarily for business – I’m a writer and trainer. Some of my writing work has absolutely nothing to do with my blog or the topics I choose, other work assignments do related to my blog posts. My idea was to have two separate addresses (URLs?) with the web site listing the blog site, and if possible, vice versa for the blog. Some of the work I do is academic and ‘conservative’, while my blog posts will be more social justice/advocacy oriented. I don’t want to appear to be pushing the blog in the face of more conservative clients or companies. Does that make sense in terms of structuring them?

Perfectly.
So, first make sure you have two free URLs. Set one up as a static website using the instructions I gave above, and set the other up as a regular blog. Make sure both are set to visible in the My Blogs page in the WP-Admin dashboard, so they’ll both display on the My Sites page as well. https://en.support.wordpress.com/my-blogs/#my-blogs-dashboard-visibility
As you don’t want them completely separated the simplest would be to have both sites in the same account so you’ll use the same username to manage and author both sites.
To cross-link them you can either use a text widget in the sidebar, or you can add a custom link to the menu. If you want to use a widget you’ll have to add the link via html. The easiest is to create a new post and add a link as you normally would. Then switch to the html editor and copy the code from there and paste it into the widget. See here for more information: https://en.support.wordpress.com/links/text-widget-links/
https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#additional-menu-itemsIf you have a logo or button for your sites you can also use an image widget: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/image-widget/
Lastly, make sure that you assign one of the sites to be linked to your username (you can also choose to have neither like to your username, if you prefer, but that means people won’t be able to find your site by clicking on your username when you leave a comment). Do that by updating the Website URL field in your account settings: https://wordpress.com/me/account
You can also add one or both sites to your Gravatar profile via the profile tab on that same page.
Let me know if you need more help with any of this.
