I Can't Alter My Menus
-
Hi, I want to include another sub-category in my menu; however, when I click on the word “menu” in my side-bar to customize it, the box where it should be just throbs in light gray as though it’s loading but never does. I’ve tried it in other browsers but there’s no difference. The “appearance – menu” option for changing the order of my menu in my WP admin works fine, but not in the other section.
Thanks. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Where are you clicking on the word “menu” when the issue occurs? At Appearance > Customize?
-
No, I click the “My Site” icon to take me to the other options as a side-bar (I don’t know what you’d call it), then click “Menus” under the “Look and Feel” category.
-
The Twenty Ten theme that you are presently using doesn’t contain any “menu” options at Customize, so the question remains.

No, I click the “My Site” icon to take me to the other options as a side-bar (I don’t know what you’d call it), then click “Menus” under the “Look and Feel” category.
Okay, got it. That works for me. I was able to reach the Menus page via the link under Look and Feel. The error you are encounteri might be a browser issue. Please see the Browser Issues support page for suggestions. What kind of device are you using when the error occurs, and which browser (and version)?

I’m using a desktop with Chrome, but I’ve tried it in Firefox also. The feature was working fine up until a day or two ago and allowed me to sort out all of my menus with no problem.

Have you updated the browsers recently? You may tag the topic for staff attention by adding a “modlook” tag to the sidebar.
-
No, I don’t think they were updated. I just tried clearing the cache and cookies then tried again but there was no change. Okay, I’ve added the modlook tag to the side-bar. Thanks.

I would try the latest supported versions. New Firefox versions are frequently released, and version updates are sometimes released multiple times in a month. I don’t use Chrome much, but I suspect that using the latest Chrome version would be a good idea.

I think I found a way round it. I went into ‘Look and Feel >> ‘Customize’ and then made sure that my menus were set for ‘Social’ and ‘Primary’. I then clicked on the link to the ‘Edit menu…’ and it seemed to be back to normal.

Yesterday, I reported that I had successfully reached the new menus page via “Look and Feel” > Menus. That was on a test site with the Twenty Ten theme activated, the same theme I found used on the site referred to in the original post.
However, today I attempted to reach the same page on my primary site. I didn’t detect any “throbbing,” but the link didn’t work properly. Here’s a summary of the issues I encountered:
1. The first two times I clicked on “Menus” the page just jumped a bit, but nothing opened.
2. On the third try the menus page opened, or rather the shell of a menus page opened, but there were blanks where text and drop-down menus should have been.
3. It finally displayed text and two drop-down menus after about five clicks on the “Menus” button.
4. The left drop-down menu on the Customize menus page is evidently supposed to display the menu areas allowed by the theme. The theme I’m using supports only one menu, the primary menu. Instead the left drop-down menu purports to contain “3 menu areas in this theme.” However, only the first listed refers to a menu area or “location” (“Primary Navigation”) while the following two listed are menus, not menu areas.
5. When I left the Customize menus page, and returned, the text and drop-down menus were again blank, failed to appear after repeated clicks on the “Menus” tab, and only appeared after refreshing the page. -
Clicking Look and Feel >> Menus never seems to work now; however, by going to the Look and Feel >> Customize >> Navigation >> Edit Your Menu Content, as aa6177 said, the options turn up again and I was able to do what I wanted to. I’m not sure whether the issue should be considered resolved exactly, since there’s clearly something wrong there, but this appears to be a way around it. Hopefully this one won’t eventually go the same way!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for reporting this issue! I tried this out and I’m having the same issues you described. Sometimes when I navigate away (to a different site) and then come back, the Menus page finishes loading. I can also refresh the page to get the Menus to load. If you’re having trouble with this, please try one of those approaches (or one of the approaches already mentioned) to get that page to load.
I also reported this to our team so they can continue investigating the issue and hopefully get it fixed up. :)

Hi everyone,
One of our developers just launched a fix for this issue. If you have any more trouble with the Menus page not loading correctly, please let me know!

@ rachelmcr,
Yes, the menus page at Look and Feel is loading properly now, but on my primary site it still reports an incorrect number of menu areas (three when the theme only supports one) and lists the one menu area (Primary Navigation) plus two individual menus, as the “3 menu areas in this theme.”
