Hi there, what is the address of the site you need help with? When you provide that information we’ll be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Thanks! I am a student and I have this problem in many sites, they are just test sites, but I need to keep them as examples. I have my domain and server, many adresses…is not a way better than do public here all the adresses that I want to keep private? :-)

Hello again, WordPress comes in 2 flavors: the fully hosted WordPressdotcom (where we are ) and the open source WordPress (org) project at https://wordpress.org This support guide explains some of the differences between them: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Just to clarify, this support forum assists users of WordPressdotcom hosted sites and the guidance provided here may not be relevant to DIY WordPress.org sites hosted with an external hosting provider (e.g. Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc.).

From what I can see, a simple install of the WordPress software does not give you the ability to make your site completely Private, only discourage search engines from indexing your site. In order to make a site completely Private, like on WordPress.com, you might need to use a plugin.

For further help with a site using the open source WordPress software, you can find all the support information at https://wordpress.org/support/ where they likely have more experience with the type of issue you are having. If you don’t have a username on the ORG forums, you can register one on that page. I also suggest searching the forums there for a similar issue before posting.

    Best wishes

  • Hi there,

The self-hosted WordPress software does not have an option to set a site to private, no. You need to use a maintenance mode plugin to do that instead, to have the site accessible only to you, or a membership plugin if you want content on the site only accessible to certain people.
