I can't edit/trash a home page I don't want

  • Unknown's avatar

The page titled Home doesn’t show up under “All pages,” and has no edit button. It DOES show up if I “view site.” It says :”Not Found: You’re searching for something that isn’t here.” I can add another Home page, but this one still shows up on the site. Can you show me how to delete this strange page?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The Home page of your blog at http://virginiasanderson.com/ is meant to display all your published posts on it and will do that automatically ie. by default. It cannot be edited.

You have two choices on any blog
    (1) All posts on the front page.
    (2) A static front page and posts on a different page.

By default the front page of your blog displays all published posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. That is for the convenience of your returning visitors who will not be happy to have to click through an another page every time they visit your blog as they come to read your most recently published content. Creating that situation can make some visitors annoyed – so annoyed that they stop following your blog.

However, if you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for all published posts (not pages) to display on in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top.

To do that create two pages first http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/

After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.
    A static page (select below)
    Front page:
    Posts page:

    The guide is here http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

It says :”Not Found: You’re searching for something that isn’t here.”

There is nothing wrong with your site. By default the front page of the blog or any other page you set as a static front page is the only page that will display all published posts on it. As soon as you publish a post not a page the front page error message and searchbox that appears on every new WordPress.COM blog will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

I must not have been clear. I created another “home” page and made it a static front page. When I viewed the site, the menu bar said “Home, Home, Books.” I’d have been glad to use either “hone” page as the static from page, but the one that says “Not Found” doesn’t show up when I click “all pags,” and has no edit button. so I can’t do ANYTHING with it. I need to know how to make it active so I can actually edit it, or I need to get rid of it so I can create t he static front page I want. I understand everything you wrote above. If I can’t get rid of this page, I’ll have to trash this theme and start over (I guess). I’ve already been struggling to find a way to edit this page for more than an hour. Thanks!

I trashed the second home page had created to see if that would make the Not Found “Home” page usable, but it did not.

This is the first time I’ve had this kind of problem. I have to quit now as I have an appointment, but I did get rid of the “Not Found” message. But I still can’t get the “home” page to show up as an option for my static front page or on All Pages. Now I have two “home” pages with the same text, but only one shows up anywhere. If I trash either, they both disappear. I will struggle with this a bit more next time I am able to work on the site. Sorry to be so much trouble.

That’s strange! It sounds like it might have been a theme-related bug or just a glitch. Is the problem still happening for you?

I hope to be able to work on this tomorrow. If the two home pages are still there, I’m going to try some fixes such as adding other pages not labeled “home” and seeing if I can make one of them my static front page. If these ideas don’t work, I will write again. Thanks!

Sounds good. Here are some tips that may also help:

The Koi theme creates a “Home” link as the first menu item by default as part of the theme. To override that, you can create a custom menu. I checked your blog and I see you started to create a custom menu, but you haven’t yet saved it or assigned it a location. To do that:

Go here and click the “Save Menu” button:
    https://virginiasanderson.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php

Then make sure the menu only has the items you want in it (you currently have two Home pages added, so you can delete one).

Once you have created the menu items you want, select the “Primary Navigation” option at the bottom of the custom menu and save again.

That should be the last step for menu setup in your case. If you are still having trouble with it this week, please let me know. If you’d be willing to write a bit more about what made the process of setting up a menu difficult in your opinion, I would love to hear a bit more detail about that.

Thanks so much for the advice. I didn’t get to work on this yesterday but hope to in the next day or so. I did think that the custom menu option might work, but I had never needed to do that on any of my other blogs, so I thought surely there was just some tweak I had missed. But it sounds as if the custom option might be the best choice with this theme. I really, really appreciate the level of support I’m getting with WordPress. It’s why I’ve stuck with WP rather than the other options I’ve considered.

It could be that you used a different theme or configured the home page for the other blogs in a different way.

    That’s so great to hear!

I appreciate that you invited updates on this. I was able to create the custom menu and that solved a lot of problems. I do have a comment on the “menu” process. There are several places to click on “navigation” and “menu,” but only the one under Appearances under WP-Admin actually allows you to add new pages to the custom menu. The others have a “add new item” line, but it’s not a link and does nothing. I tracked down the correct menu-editing page through the link you provided, but lost a lot of time clicking on the wrong “menu” buttons before I finally decided I must be in the wrong place. (Definition of insanity–trying the same thing over and over and getting the same result. . . . :-)).

But I do find this theme oddly unresponsive or perhaps just more confusing than the others I’ve used. I wanted to eliminate the “pages” widget. Went into “customize” and “widgets” in both places they appear. Removed “pages.” But it’s still there! It doesn’t show up under “sidebar,” so I can’t drag it anywhere to get rid of it. But it remains on the site.

I don’t have a lot of time to work on this and it’s frustrating to spend so much time on things I’ve been able to do easily in other themes. I’m considering switching themes again. I hope I don’t lose the work I’ve done so far if I do. Will my pages and content transfer?

The others have a “add new item” line, but it’s not a link and does nothing.

You need to click the “+” symbol to add a new item. The “Add New Item” text has an arrow next to it that tries to direct you to the correct thing to click on, but it looks like it might be a point of confusion sometimes instead! (this is really good to know)

But I do find this theme oddly unresponsive or perhaps just more confusing than the others I’ve used.

Koi is indeed a bit of an older theme. All the newer ones have responsive designs. You can look through a list of new themes at https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/newest/ if you’re thinking of switching.

It looks like there is a set of default widgets that appear on the Koi theme if you haven’t added any widgets yourself. To get rid of the “Pages” widget, just add any widget and save.

Sorry about the frustration! You won’t lose any work when switching themes. The worst case would be needing to reassign the menu or widget locations, but it’s rare that’s needed and shouldn’t take too long to fix if it does happen.
