I can't get rid of social media buttons. HELP???

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I am starting up a website for a eulogy writing service and I REALLY don’t want those annoying social media buttons on the side. I have deselected every option that could possibly make these buttons show up and they’re still on my page. In fact, I tried adding new social media pages to see if anything changes, and it doesn’t. This is EXTREMELY frustrating and confusing, and some further clarification on how to remove these social media buttons would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Garrett

    Hi Garrett
That’s a great idea you have there – I hope that you do well with it!

I REALLY don’t want those annoying social media buttons on the side.

The social Media buttons are there because you have a sidebar on the About Me, How to get started, and News pages. You can make them go away by going to the Full Width page template. In:
    https://wordpress.com/theme/gateway
    it says

Gateway supports the Full-Width page template, when applied, the page will not feature a sidebar

So you can make the sidebars go away by following the instructions in:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-options/#template

Thanks for the kind words, Dave! I appreciate the attempt to help out, but it seems like the how-to’s you linked are outdated, seeing as the layouts of the User Interface looks different, and I can’t find where the instructions are describing on how to remove the social media buttons.

Where can I find the options to change the layout then if I can’t find it with the provided instructions?

    Thanks again,
    ~Garrett

    Hello again Garrett
Since there appears to be difficulties with your current theme, the next logical thing would be to consider using a different theme. . The Gateway theme does do a full width home page (which you already have) but that appears to be the only page that does so.

Since you do not want the social media buttons appearing in a sidebar, then a theme that does Full Width on all pages might be just the thing!

This search will give you a list of full width themes. Take a look through them and see if one stands out for you:
    https://wordpress.com/themes?s=full+width

This search will show both paid and free themes, you can sort them further should you care to. Pick one that does all full width pages.

    best,
    dave

    Hey Garrett!

Try this and let me know if this works for you.

    1. To get rid of that side bar and the social media icons, start by going to the CUSTOMIZE area. It’s found on the left sidebar when you log in, under PERSONALIZE, next to THEMES.

    2. On the new left menu, go to the WIDGETS section and click on SIDEBAR.

    3. Expand the SOCIAL MEDIA ICONS box (click the little triangle pointing down to show a long list of social media names).

    4. Under TUMBLR USERNAME click the red DELETE. The widget should disappear!

    5. Once you’re done, click the blue SAVE & PUBLISH button at the top.

Let me know how that goes for you and if you need any more help.
