I can't log in – fear I have lost my WP site

  • Unknown's avatar

I can’t log in with my usual username as it tells me the password is wrong. When I request the link to reset my password, and it’s sent to my email address, it is for a different username altogether! (“notahintofpink”, an old site I used to have). How can I get my WP files back??
    Blog url: http://notahintofpink.wordpress.com/

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sounds like you are entering the wrong email into the lost password form for the blog you would like to access.

I noticed you posted in the forums as username notahintofpink, and that means you are already logged in and you should be able to access http://notahintofpink.wordpress.com/ Were you trying to access a different blog?

    Thanks for your reply, *designsimply*!

I know, it does sound as if I am entering the wrong email address, but I only use one. Yes, it is a different blog, it’s http://www.busykidsglasgow.co.uk – I have changed servers and can’t access the WordPress files to get it back up and running. Help!

It doesn’t seem like that site http://www.busykidsglasgow.co.uk/ is currently hosted by WordPress.com. If you registered the domain through WordPress.com, is there a chance you let your domain name expire?

  • Unknown's avatar

OK-according to a April 2012 Google cache of the site’s contact page, it’s definitely not hosted on WordPress.com.

Please contact your webhost directly and/or seek help over at the forum for self-hosted WordPress installs http://wordpress.org/support/

Kindly read this to understand the differences

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

It appears as if Jennifer is right as a “whois” search for busykidsglasgow.co.uk shows that that domain name is available for purchase. You need to purchase it from a registrar as soon as possible so that someone does not grab it away from you.

~~@tsp-Now isn’t that the strangest thing! I used a different Whois and it shows that it’s already registered via Virtualnames to someone in Glasgow with the initials A.D. and the registration is good until August 2012. Maybe they’re looking for an early bird registrant if the original owner doesn’t renew.

But regardless, still not WordPress.com. :)

Hmmm, that is strange. Who knows the fickle mind of the web?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have had several cases of recent where different whois sources had diferent information as well as the DNS checker had different name server info – strange

Thanks everyone. I know who A.D. is, I bought the website from her in March of this year. I changed servers at the beginning of this month, and the problems have been since then.

I think I am getting really mixed up here between .com and .org, though I can’t even seem to find a login page on wordpress.org. Sorry if I’m wasting people’s time here. I have posted a similar question on .org but it had one answer which didn’t help and it’s now disappeared down the list. I really don’t know where to go from here. I have contacted A.D. in the hope that she will still have the WordPress files, as wordpress.org is telling me to download it and start from scratch. The blog has been running for a couple of years now!

You won’t be logging in on WordPress.org to access your site. That you need to do with the webhost who hosted the website. I suggest contacting A. D., who is still listed as the domain owner and get it worked out with her ASAP.

    Good wishes for your site.
