I can’t post to home page

    Hi: My, um, lame way of starting my blog was to just add pages (with genres and titles of my articles/short stories as subcategories) so the folks who might hire me for freelance could look at that while I blogged. So now I’ve typed in all this amusing stuff and now want to blog, but I can’t get anything on my “home” page, which is apparently static. All the headers at the top are workable for me but not “home” which I can’t seem to find on the Dashboard. That pages says “sorry there are no posts” I know this is frustrating for you guys, but there is a fairly steep learning curve. When I got to add a post (ostensibly for that static home page but I could be wrong) and add something, it shows up nowhere. Under categories on the “add post” page there is only one “bio” which is “most used” apparently. I am SO new to this that blog speak will go directly over my head, and like many I got caught up in how pretty it looked but now have to learn how to use it. Can someone just tell me “go left at the bla bla and take a right and the bla bla bla? Also, can someone please recommend a WordPress for Dummies or something akin?

  • Assuming that http://colleencreamer.wordpress.com/ is the blog in question, you currently have your front page set to display your latest blog posts. Moreover, you do not have any published blog posts yet; I only see two (2) drafts. When creating a blog post, make sure that you click “Publish” and not “Save Draft”. Does this help?

    If not, please note where you require clarification.

    Yes … Well … I am a knucklehead. However when I finally did publish, tbe below is what I get, which leaves the list on the right in the middle of the page. But when I click on more all is well and the list is where it should be. How do I make it so the entire post is visible when I get to the Home page. And I will look a the beginners sources :)

    You inserted the more tag before the post. Open the post in the post editor and remove the more tag.

    God sorry I went to “posts”, then edit (if this now what you meant by opening post editor then pls let me know) and see nothing that gives me that option of removing a more tag. There is a place to add tags but …

    The more tag looks like a horizontal line with “more” at the right end. Put your cursor at the beginning of the first line of text and hit the delete or backspace key.

    1. Posts > Edit > click on title of post. That’s the post editor.

    2. But what you’ve published as a post should be a page, and what you’ve published as pages should be post categories.

    Thanks all … I got it removed. Yeah, I knew I was using pages as categories. I just got hooked on doing it that way because it seemed so easy and I could not seem to create categories. I realize this will be cumbersome later. Any thoughts on a easy way to fix and not entirely redo? I am gong to create another more fun blog, and maybe by blogging first I won’t find myself down this path.

    I am in need of help also. I started a blog tonight – Sharon’s Book Blog. I made a home page which is fine. But on the original home page that came up, it says something to the effect that what I’m looking for is not there. Can I delet the original page and use the one I set up? I am so new so please bear with me. Thanks

    @colleencreamer:
    – It seemed easy, but you cannot add posts to pages: you can only link to them.
    – Categories are not displayed in your sidebar unless you add the Categories widget; and a category won’t be displayed unless there’s at least one post assigned to it.

    @sharon54220:
    – Please give the URL of your blog when you ask a question. We need to look at it, and we’re not obliged to try find it by trying to see if your nick is also the blog name.
    – It says that what you’re looking for is not there, because there are no posts (after you deleted the sample “Hello World” post). Once you add posts of your own, it will be alright.
    – The original Home tab is a link to the front of your blog, and it’s built into the theme: you can’t remove it. What you must do is rename the “Home” page you created, make your About page its parent (so that it won’t show in the header), and set it as a static front (in Settings>Reading).
    – When you have a static front page, you also need a posts page: create a BLANK page, name it Posts or whatever you see fit, and set it as your posts page (also in Settings>Reading).
