I can't save menus

  • Unknown's avatar

I have all of my pages, but the program won’t allow me to save any new menu(s)….it always goes to a ‘sever problem’…when I go back, my menu is lost and I have to start over. I really need some help. Thanks so much

    Hi “timethief”,
…thank you so much for replying…I believe it was “the cache”…I love working on WordPress…1st time I’ve ever experienced a problem. After I “save”…I still get sent off the site and a message about “temporary server problems”, but when I go back after a minute, my menu has saved. I don’t know whether this will eventually create more issues, but for now, I have a new menu…little nervous about continuing since this website is a labor of love…thanks again!

Hooray! You resolved this. Happy blogging.

Hi…I’m back….I thought clearing the cache solved the problem…I continued working for hours….and now I’ve again lost all of my work…my menu went back to what it was when I first started. Maybe there is a limit to the # of pages I can save?

I’ve gone ahead and tagged this for Staff attention as there is another user who is encountering a similar problem saving a new menu in the Twenty Ten theme. No need to post in that other thread as Staff will assist you here.

Staff, this is the other thread referred to.

You also mention that you were working for hours. Does your menu contain a large number of items in it?

Thanks for the response. Yes I have many items that I’m saving within the menu. What I’ve resorted to is building the menu slowly. It takes 5-10 minutes to “save”…each time I save the program indicates that there is a “server problem” and that I should “go back” in a minute. If I wait another 5-10 minutes(before returning) the program continues to “save”, and if lucky, the work I’ve done won’t go missing. I don’t think it should be this way, but it’s the method I’ve been using. Any advice or help you can offer would be fantastic…I love the program.

…just a bit more information…the error is “WordPress.com-503 Error” and the message reads:
    “Whoops!
Something has gone wrong with our servers, and we’ve just been notified of the problem.
This will be fixed as soon as possible, so kindly reload in a minute and things should be back to normal.

    …I hope the details help.
    Thanks again.

  • @oakbayhigh can you let me know how many menu items you’re trying to add?

I’m not positive of what the limit may be, but in most cases the menu will be unwieldy for your readers long before you reach that point. If they’re on mobile, for example, you aren’t going to be able to get all of those items on one screen.

I would recommend using child pages and the list pages shortcode instead of trying to put everything in a menu. If you’re willing to try that, let us know and I’ll help you generate the proper code.

Thank you for looking at my page. I believe you are correct, and that the number of items may be too large.
ows for “child pages”? Because this site is for a public school, maybe it would be more advantageous to subscribe to a “Premuim Plan”(?). Would this be the way to go? Do I have to change themes in order to accommodate “child pages”? Any help or advice you can offer would be great. This is my first attempt at a “WordPress” site, so I want it to look good and be user friendly. Thanks in advance for your advisement and help. :)

BY my recollection, technically there is no Page number limit but I recall that when you get to about 88 there will be issues. More to the point is that visitors are not going to cotton to many pages. If the number is overwhelming they may not click into each one and read.

  • @oakbayhigh you’d be welcome to change plans if you’d like. You don’t have to though (it can just be nice to get the direct support and have more features.)

You don’t have to change themes, either. Maybe make a page called Courses. Add this code to the page:

    [child-pages]

Then edit each letter page, and select Courses as its parent page. In each letter page add, the child pages code, too.

Then edit each course and give it a parent as well.

The caveat: each page can only have one parent. So if it would make more sense to group the courses by subject instead of by letter, you can do that.

    We have more details here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/list-pages-shortcode/

    and here:
