I can’t see many of my images on pages

Hi, semi recently (maybe within last week) I found i cant see many images on my posts – what’s happening? I haven’t updated these pages, nor have i deleted those images from my media gallery (that i know of, i have many many images so i cant check and cant even remember which ones were in those posts!!)
they just show as grey circle with white ‘-‘ through it, like a do not enter sign

one example post with this problem

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi! That page is password-protected, so I can’t tell for sure what images are missing there.

But I do see you, or someone logged in as you, deleted a few images yesterday. Was that intentional, and are those the same images that are missing now?

Hi thank you for your reply!!
Oh, yes I was doing some testing, those aren’t the images that are missing unfortunately…

Sorry for my typo, but you can see in the first image in sample post, the gray circle where the image should be, which looks different than when I pay an image and delete (second photo, ripped photo icon)
Hopefully there’s an easy solution as this happens on a good few of my posts and I have too many posts and photos to figure out and find which photos are which!

  • Hi and thank you for the screenshots! I was able to see your screenshots. Typically “no entry”-style symbols appear for images which are “hotlinked” (as in: inserted into your posts but originally hosted on a different website).

Hosts will often use preventative measures like this to ensure that images they host are not being displayed elsewhere; the short explanation why they block this is that it can use up extra bandwidth for that host.

For the first post that you linked above (https://someglee.wordpress.com/2021/12/15/steel-lateral-torsional-bracing/) are the images you used located in your Media library?

If you try to edit that post and check the addresses of the images which are not working, are they being linked to from another website or host?

Thank you for your quick response!!!
No, all my images are original and uploaded to my media gallery, not hot linked

I’m not sure how to find any link on my image, I’ve updated the test post with what my editor looks like when I click the do not enter image!

  • Hi there,

No, all my images are original and uploaded to my media gallery, not hot linked

Out of curiosity, where are you sourcing your images from? Google somehow? Are you using the “Insert from URL” option when adding those to your pages/posts?

To clarify this does not upload images to your media library, but it does “hotlink” the image so it appears within your content, but is still hosted at the original location. We see this on our end when we examine the source code of your posts, where we can see the Google Image URLs directly. You can see I’ve highlighted the image URL in this screenshot from your Steel Lateral Stability Bracing post:

We would not see this for images that have been uploaded directly to the media library, so from what we can see these images were all added to your site via the original Google URL you provided. The issue with hotlinking is that if the original image (the one in the link) is taken offline, this has the effect of also removing the copy you have in your blog post.

For hot-linked images like this, there is nothing we can do to recover the image since we only have access to WordPress tools, but do not have access to the original images via Google.

Thank you for the detailed reply!
That is very strange!! I typically screengrab, copy, then paste directly into WordPress, maybe for these select images I did something else… Darn, I wonder where those images went

Sometimes I’ll copy image from my personal Google photos, then paste into WordPress, maybe that it automatically links to google instead of uploading?

Thank you, I’m thinking maybe it’s the latter and I deleted the Google image off my photos app

Yes, I thankfully noticed this within the 60 days of google keeping trashed images, I did a clean up of my google photos, and deleted the images I used in my post

So it looks like if you copy and paste the image from your Google photo album, it will automatically hotlink and not add to the WordPress album

I assumed it would add to my wp album like it does when I copy and paste images from screengrab

When I restored the deleted images from my Google photo account, the image shows back up on my post! Phew, now I’ll have to go and find these and make sure to upload them to wp album so my post images don’t fall victim to deletion again!

Thank you very much for all the help!!

  • I just tested this from my Google Photos. If I copy the image itself from Google Photos and paste that, that ends up in my library.

If I copy the image _address_, then add an image and insert from URL, it stays linked to my account.

Can you confirm that’s what you see?

Weirdly enough, when I copy and paste from my Google photos, it does upload to me wp album… I have no idea how I linked to my Google photo link because I never insert an image block and “upload from url”

Even when I copied my Google photo link and pasted it in wp, it showed as a link, not a photo.. not sure how I managed to embed my google photos as links and not to my wp album since I can’t remember ever doing anything other than copying and pasting photos directly into WP editor

Mystery to me, thank you for all the help!
