I can't solve a simple menu problem with Sketch.

I’m using Sketch to develop a very simple web site without blog or feedback facilities.(www.davidmillerkeswick.com). I started this site in December and I couldn’t get the home page menu working as shown on the Sketch Theme summery. Then suddenly in January without me doing anything at all to change things the display just started working properly. I was pleased.

But a few days later it went back to not working properly.

I must emphasise I did nothing to cause these changes in my web site’s behaviour.

I normally use Safari but the problem is the same with Firefox.

(I HAVE gone through as many relevant forum dialogues as I can find -without success.)

    Thanks in anticipation.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi!

It looks like the front page of your site is currently setup as the Contact page. Can you let me know what content you would like displayed instead? If you’re looking to display a portfolio page, you can follow the instructions under the theme demo here (specifically under “Portfolio Page Template”):

    Hello Jeremy,

I’d like to have a very simple site that I can manage easily. I envisage it being used by people who have visited or plan to visit me. I
am not looking to use it as a direct marketing tool or maintain dialogues with people on it.

It could be that my failure to understand the functionality of portfolios etc is linked to this very simple use (or that I’m just thick).

I ended up making the current web site as a simple hierarchy of pages.
Although the “home” page is called “contact” I don’t think it has any of the special contact resources in it. I believe I created the contact page to be the same as the rest.

So to answer your question about what I want pages to contain:

    Home page:
    site title
    horizontal menu of other pages ” 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 contact”
    some text about me.

    2015 page (etc):
    images of my work

    That’s it.
If you can give me an insight into what I’m doing wrong I’d be very grateful.
    Dave Miller

ps: If the following bit of info is any use to you: the site suddenly started working as I intended (showing a horizontal list of pages) and then a couple of weeks later reverted to showing a “menu” icon (without any intervention from me during the whole period).

    Hey Dave,

As I’m hearing you describe your envisioned site, it sounds a lot like the opening page on the Twenty Twelve theme:

    https://twentytwelvedemo.wordpress.com/

That first page could have some intro text about you. Then, we could setup additional pages in that menu across the top. How does that site setup sound?

    Hello Jeremy,
You are right twentytwelve does have the sort of structure I was thinking of. I’m willing to give that a go. I might at least learn something by looking at the problem from a different viewpoint.
I’m concerned that the twenty twelve demo has as obvious blog structure and what I’d have to do is deblogify it. Is that possible (for a non-expert)?

Definitely possible! Each page can be set to display without the sidebar, which will help to remove the blog feel. You can do this by adjusting the Page Template for each page:

    Page Attributes

Can you try getting this up and going? I’m here if you have any questions!

I’ve switched to the TwentyTwelve theme and this looks like it is going to work for my needs.
Thank you very much for your help.
