I can’t take it any more — slowpoke performance
-
I was disheartened beyond belief to read in the Support info that the recommended browser is Firefox. What now? It took me HOURS yesterday to put together a post that should’ve taken no more than about 1 hour, maybe 45 minutes. I type fast and I have a high-speed connection, yet again and again and again I had to twiddle my thumbs and wait on WP to produce, whether a refresh or an update or a preview or finish displaing the typing I’d just done or just allowing me to highlight a word or phrase for adding formatting or a link. The whole experience left me quite cranky.
I cleared my cache. Nothing. I tried IE (which I despise) and WP performed noticeably better, but not well. Now I’ve disabled EVERY Firefox add-on I have, and it’s running quite a bit faster it seems, but frankly I’m not optimistic because someone had already done that before me and it didn’t permanently help (see som ewhere in here: http://is.gd/5cAeT ). Besides, I’m not willing to live without very many of them.
This is so intolerable that I think I’m going to ask if there are other blog set-ups whose performance is less problematic along with any other suggestions ya’ll might have?

By definition everyone in the forum is hosted at WordPress.com, so this is probably not a good place to look for hosting suggestions; we all have one answer.

You might want to try testing the speed of your connection first:
http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest
They offer a bunch of different ways to take the test, but the Flash 8 is generally the best one.

To me, it sounds more like a computer issue; I cleaned up my hard drive and everything speeded up incredibly. Mind you, I’ve not had those kinds of problems with WP and FF myself at all.
-
They say they’ve done the cache thing, but that’s what I think as well… I think the majority of WordPress users are on Firefox now, so I doubt it’s a general browser issue — maybe the installation was bad, maybe there’s a firewall problem. But there are only so many things which could be screwing up their performance so badly: browser, computer, connection… so if it’s not the connection it narrows the possibilities to browser (unlikely) and how stuffed with crap their computer is.

It’s probably on Firefox’s end. It’s been slow sometimes for me and many pages don’t load at all. Started with the last updates I read. Many people are now switching to Chrome because of how badly Firefox has been behaving.

Started with the last updates
Could be…my FF goes into FREEZE mode every so often now. That’s why I switched to Opera. -
Not sure where you are in the world but I’m in the UK and it’s never too bad.
Reboot router.
Try the latest Firefox beta (noting of course that it IS a beta). I see much better performance with this and most of my extensions work.
What happens at different times of the day?
If you are able install Firebug and watch where the stalling is occuring. An offline editor is useful and we recommend Windows Live Writer though there are others.
Create another test blog and try posting to that?

I use Firefox, but I have – just for the hell of it – used IE and Opera. Speeds are comparable on all three, i.e., mostly OK but subject to fluctuations.
Overall, though, Firefox is definitely the best for long-term use.

Maybe worth mentioning that my blog attracts a fair number of complaints about alleged FF performance and glitches that I simply don’t experience. I think a lot of faults perceived as FF faults are, as raincoaster says, computer problems.
