I can’t upload an Excel file onto my WordPress website any longer. I keep getting a message that says ‘Sorry, this file is not permitted for security reasons’. I’ve never had this problem for the past 3 years.

Hi there!
That is a weird one, I tried to upload a couple of small xls and xlsx files on my WordPress.com site but it seems I don’t have any troubles.
For us to further isolate the issue, can you please try a couple of things:
1) Try uploading a couple of different excel files to see if a specific file is causing that issue
2) Try generating an excel file from Google sheet, Open office or MS Office just to know if a specific app is causing the issuePlease let me know how it goes ok?
-
I tried other Excel files and still encountered the same problem. Same issue with Google sheet.
-
@martyg1111 what file extension are you using? Have you put macros in these sheets?
I tried creating a Google Sheet and was able to upload it.
Also, are you using a virus scanner on your computer? If you have a virus, it’s possible it’s attaching itself to sheets.

It’s an xlsx file (Excel).
How can I create a Google sheet from my existing Excel file so I can try uploading it as well. Maybe that’s the problem. -
I just don’t understand why the xlsx file has worked just fine for 3 years and suddenly now it’s being flagged for security reasons.

I am having the same problem. I have an excel file for download by my site users, it has been there for months. I made a small tweak to the original document, but it won’t let me upload the new version. Both versions contain macros. Why would it let me upload the old version but not the new?

Apparently the folks at WordPress are not aware that WordPress recently implemented a security code into their back-end. I had to hire a 3rd party company to tell me this and they resolved the issue in 3 minutes. I now can upload Excel or any other file.

We’re gathering more info at this point and actively working on a solution. What did you have to do differently, exactly?
-
I’m having this problem too. – can someone please share what needs to be done to resolve it? Thanks!

Hi @erinjpeterson (and everyone), we were able to implement a solution for the original issue. If you are still having trouble, can you let me know what the error says?
-
It says exactly what the OP said, that the file is not allowed for security reasons. It’s a .xlsx file.
Thanks! -

Unable to upload an excel file, it’s saying not allowed for security reasons. It’s .xlsx file. Any help please
-
I didn’t hear back from @erinjpeterson, but I will email you to see if you can send more details, @robertbruce737 .
-
I just emailed you the file @supernovia, but I also tried a brand new blank .xlsx file and got the same error, so it doesn’t seem to be a problem with that particular file? I have symantec endpoint protection on this computer.
Thanks -
Is everyone using the add media option at wordpress.com/post, or are you using another method to upload these?
Also what browsers are you all using?
-
Yes. I am using add media to upload and I’m using chrome as my browser, the one I always use
