I currently have a website domain on GoDaddy. I want to start a blog. Do I need to transfer my domain to WordPress? What is the easiest to do?

    Hi there,

If you purchased a domain name through GoDaddy but you would like the domain to point visitors a blog on WordPress.com, there are two options:

    1. Domain mapping
    2. Transfer the domain name registration to WordPress.com

Transferring your registration means that you will pay WordPress.com for both hosting and domain registration services, which can simplify billing. However, if you transfer the registration, you will lose any pre-paid registration time with GoDaddy (for example – if the registration expires in June 2019 and you transfer today, you will not receive a refund from GoDaddy for January-June).

Which is why some users may prefer domain mapping:

Domain mapping means your domain stays registered with GoDaddy, but the address points visitors to your WordPress.com site. You will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan for this service, along with the domain mapping upgrade fee.

Please see here for instructions on mapping your domain name:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Here are instructions to transfer the domain:

    I hope this helps!

PS – Personally, I have used domain mapping and find it can be a very easy solution, as long as one remembers to pay the original registrar for renewal. :)
