  …option but was not given the option to chose a free and now getting a message to pay. How can I make this account the free version? Do I just delete and start over?

  Hi! You added a premium domain, but you can remove that here.

  Then, you should have an option to skip the paid domain, and then choose the free plan:
  https://wordpress.com/home/
