I don’t see this specific question about Text widget.

My question is simple. What is the purpose of the text widget.
Ok, I know I’m dumber than dirt so explain it to me like you would to a 5 year old :)What can I put in there? Im assuming it will show up in my side bar. Can I use html of any kind. For instant a sign up form. I could experoment but I would like to know how it performs before I do.
Thanks
Bob

we were all newbies once, don’t feel so bad. text widgets are for anything – you can insert pictures, links and any html code you might want to use. text widgets are for information you might want to put at the sidebar for easy viewing for your reader; in my blog, i put stuff like what i’m reading atm and what i’m listening to atm. you should see some blogs around and see how they use their text widgets to give you an idea what you want to do with yours.

well i’m not sure but the simple ones like bold, italics, strike that i have used are working fine… what form of html can’t be put in text widgets do u know?

The best use I’ve seen so far for a text widget was done by redgoat. (It’s gone now that he switched to Regulus.) He had his text widget set up to explain RSS to his site visitors as well as linking to another page that had something else I can’t remember. So I’m guessing that the anchor tag works in the text widget as well.

I use the text widget to display a picture.
You can pretty much use it for whatever you want.
Many people use it as a quick intro to the blog for example.

Thanks guys
I’ve got it doped now. One thing I noticed is if I put the text widget as the last widget it ran to the left into the post. Is their a reason for this? Up near the top worked fine.

We need an example to see what you are talking about please. I just tried it on my text blog with the theme you are using and don’t see any issues with it.
-
Is it my imagination or does Regulus not accept any HTML code in the text widget? I’ve tried everything I can think of but it seems to only present plain text.
sulz – how did you get bold & italics in there? Are you switching themes, making the changes and then going back to Regulus?
OK – one more question: in looking at your site, I see that you can get it to take the code in the text itself but not the title. I’ll give that a whirl. Maybe it’s just the title that won’t accept it.
-
vivianpaige: you’re right i just tried putting bold in the title of a text widget it doesn’t work but it works fine in the text widget itself… and it doesn’t change the font for some reason (i tried to change the font colour but it’s still stuck at grey) but italics and bold work. i have not tried inserting a image though.

Regulus CSS overrides font tags. That is the way Ben designed it.
Widget titles strip all HTML tags.
Text Widgets strip the same HTML as posts: script tags, style tags, etc.

As a regulus theme user, I’d like to see FORM html code being allowed in a text widget … be a useful way of adding value to the site.

I can live with the titles being stripped – I’m just glad to have a way to put in a quick note using the text widget (although if I don’t use a title, the space is still taken up :( )
And I just saw the other post that the code has been added back to strip the font tags (which had been removed). Glad to know the color thing still works :)

2012olympiccompetitor: Form code could be very useful for implementing contact forms, surveys, and numerous other options, however, I would imagine that this forum would end up overwhelmed with users asking for help on that subject alone.
How can I hide my email address? How do I validate form results? How do I reorder form results? What’s the difference between Post and Get? My form’s broken, could someone take a look at it?
Once the entire forum gets bogged down with answering coding questions, it’ll be useless for users seeking actual WP support. I would think that forms should only be available on someone’s own hosted service or be limited to whatever’s presupplied with a theme.

What specifically are you doing? To edit a text widget, you click on the little box with the two lines within the widget on the Dashboard -> Presentation -> Sidebar Widgets page.
Please give us some more details as to what you are doing.

It took me forever to figure out how to open the widget. :O Then I read something that drmike wrote here and I finally figured it out. You can have html, text, and/or pictures. If you want what ever you put in there centered, the code is:
<div align=”center”>PLACE CODE HERE</div>

There are illustrated instructions for using text widgets here http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/12/24/using-the-text-widget/
If you have been using these instructions and bogged down then please take note of drmike’s requests:
“What specifically are you doing?”
“Please give us some more details as to what you are doing.”
