I don't think WordPress' Happiness Engineers are real.

“How do I contact a Happiness Engineer?” That’s what I entered into the text field in the previous screen.

It’s also really irritating to click on every Help button imaginable only to get redirected every time to a page that asks you to submit your request to the public forum. What if I just want a definitive answer from someone who works at WordPress without having to sift through 3 posts about the same thing that are equally unhelpful?

At one point, I passed by a page that seemed to offer Live Chat but claimed that it was run by volunteers who couldn’t be consistently relied upon to provide support. What??

You’ve reached WordPress.com support, and I am a real, live, Happiness Engineer.

We set up our support form the way we do because the vast majority of people simply need directions that we have within a support doc, and that can be a quick way to solve the problem. However, if you have an issue that isn’t documented there or need further assistance, we’re happy to help you out.

Please let me know what you’re trying to do and I’ll be happy to assist you further.

OK, I’m a user on my company’s WordPress account and I was trying to add my picture but clicking on the picture icon in the top-right corner of the profile-editing page (as this post advised me to do) just kept reloading the profile editing page, and didn’t link to Gravatar. I scoured the rest of the page for links to Gravatar (or anywhere else I could upload a profile picture) and came up empty. After clicking the Help button and failing to find a helpful response, I just went to Gravatar, where they asked me to log in with my WordPress credentials. I did that, but they told me I had an invalid login. I created a new account there with the same email and password, but they made me enter a different username than was associated with my WordPress account, and that seems to have given me yet another WordPress account that, at first, seemed completely unrelated to my first one. I was left with two accounts and still no visible picture on the one I wanted to use to publish content, which is when I wanted to contact somebody directly to get the issue resolved quickly.

After a little while, the pictures seemed to sync up. I don’t know whether or not I still have two WordPress accounts, though they would both be attributable to the same email if there are two. The usernames on the two are different, though. One is “dylan735” and the other is simply “dylan.” Also, the profile-editing pages for each still look different. When I access it through my company blog’s domain, I don’t get any of the gravatar options.

I checked for the solution and I couldn’t easily/quickly find one. I don’t think it’s good customer service form to require that I post the issue publicly to get a response from your support team. In this case, I don’t much care, but what would have happened if I would have rathered contact support directly/privately? You have no facility for that, and it’s really aggravating when you’re looking for someone to talk to, particularly as frustration is mounting from attempts to sort through a really counterintuitive process on your site.

First of all, I apologize for the round-about trip you had to take to try to resolve your issue. As far as support goes, our primary support mechanism for free accounts is our support forums. Users with upgrades get additional options for support.

It looks like your Gravatar is working for your dylan735 account. The user “dylan” has been registered since 2005/09/26 and has a different Gravatar and email account.

WordPress.com and Gravatar accounts are essentially synonymous, and each account requires a unique email address, so it would be impossible (or should be!) for you to have two different usernames with a single email address. You can, however, associate multiple email addresses with a single Gravatar.

And while the profile editing pages on WordPress.com and Gravatar.com look different, they are drawing from the same database and the information, while presented there may look different, is actually the same information.

I hope this answers all of your questions. If not, please let me know

I have a screencast of myself logging in with both usernames and getting to two different profiles associated with the same email but I don’t want to post myself entering my credentials on a public forum. Is it possible to contact Support without airing my dirty laundry to the world?

No problem. I’ve sent an email to you. Please look for that and respond there so I can further troubleshoot this with you.
