I don’t understand the concept of categories

I am not completely illiterate, I have afterall put together a blog but I do not understand the concept of categogies as far as it relates to a blog. Right now my opening page displays the word Uncategorized and the word the word Uncategorized shows up when my blog is on a Google search list. I am not completly dumb but I am clueless as to this concept.
Would a kind and patient person explain to me. It is probably something I would understand immediately and be embarrassed that I could not see the forest for the trees.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
