I don't understand this message at the top of my own Reader page. Please help!

I got this message at the top of my own Reader page. What does it mean?
‘This is a post on a private site that you’re following, but not currently a member of. Please request membership to display these posts in Reader.’The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
Regarding a private site, viewer is a user role. See the Viewer section of the User Roles support page. The only way to become a viewer of a private site is to accept an invitation. You may possibly begin the process by requesting an invitation from the site owner/administrator. However, I’m unaware of any way to do this in this case, other than via email, should you happen to know the account email address associated with the private site.

Amendment:
See the Viewing a Private Site section of the Privacy Settings support page, which says:
You can request access to a private site by clicking on the “Request access” link when attempting to visit a private site while logged into your WordPress.com account…

Thank you, musicdoc1.
I understand what you shared. I’ve had my site on private for 4+ years and understand all of what you shared. It’s that the message was at the top of my own Reader page…and it was NOT about any site in particular… NO mention of a particular site or a username. Just exactly these words: “‘This is a post on a private site that you’re following, but not currently a member of. Please request membership to display these posts in Reader.”
Weird.I’ve never seen that message before on my own Reader page.
The message is gone today.
Thank you, again, for trying to help me.

I understood that the message was at the top of your reader, but I don’t understand why it would say “This is a post…” and yet not identify the post referred to, and provide links to the post and the site its on. Was there a post, or a link to a post accompanying the message.
I’d suggest that if you want a definitive answer regarding the cause of the message, and what it might mean, you add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.

This is a post on a private site that you’re following
If there is a link to the post included with the message, or an excerpt, is it something you recognize, or that might have led you to follow the site?
Are there any site among your followed sites that you don’t recognize? -
If I found such a message in my Reader, then I would presume that the message referred to, or should refer to, the post which immediately followed the message.

There no post and no link…nothing that led to a site of one of my friends/readers who is on private setting…or who might have written a private/protected post. :-(
I would assume what you have assumed…but, there was no post that followed that message. It was late last night when I found it and no one posted anything new until this morning. And the post that followed it was not a protected or private post. Weird.
Very weird.
Thank you SO much for trying to help me! I sure do appreciate it! :-)
