I don't want a brand-new format

  • Unknown's avatar

I also had a time getting used to the new editor but i am gradually getting the hang of it.

A simple hack to get the old editor back is simply use the wordpress official app since it has the option to choose between the 2.

    My 2 cents! :)

@konvigilante you can also use the classic editor if you edit a post. The option is there to use the classic editor then (in WP Admin), but I assume that is just for a transition period and will be removed eventually.

  • @waletras, the Classic Block within the new editor is there to stay so you can keep using that one if you like.

    @koiscribblings
if you see the error about updating failed, please try clearing your browser’s cache. You can find here more information on how to clear the cache depending on your browser:

    https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

We are already investigating this issue but, for most users, clearing their cache seems to fix it.

staff-mckluskey thank you for that info. It’s good to know that it will be staying, that’s something, but it is different to the original classic editor and I can no longer find the ‘categories’ when writing a post. I can see ‘tags’ but not ‘categories’.

Back in June this year, I requested that one of my blogs be switched to the Classic Editor, here’s the thread I asked in (and it has a reference to the original thread where I was asked by Staff to post my request in a separate thread). That was done for me and I was very grateful. I was also told – as were many, many others (most of WordPress’s users) that the Classic Editor that was accessed via wp-admin would be here until at least 2022.

Late last night (past midnight on 1st October) I found that it was back to the Block Editor again. All my blogs have changed to it, including one I had some help on from wp dot com staff only a day or two ago.

The interface of the the Gutenberg editor (Block Editor) does my head in. I already have brain fog which makes it difficult for me to learn new things and remember what I’m doing. I have spent the last six weeks editing the css on one of my blogs, and as I was just about to reopen it (as it’s currently in private mode) I saw this change.

Yes, I can use the new editor with the classic block. But tell me something WordPress dot com, why lie to us? Why not just tell us from the outset that you were going to be removing access to the Classic editor from wp-admin, for ALL of us?

And if you think I believe you that the classic block is here to stay, too, well you’re wrong.

Here’s the thread, I mentioned. I forgot to add it to the last comment: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/please-switch-my-blog-to-classic-editor/

and @lorraineeedwards I’m sorry to barge in on your thread, it’s not good forum etiquette but this all needs saying – from as many of us as possible.

  • Unknown's avatar

@fstat like many others have said, it claims “Updating failed. Sorry, you are not allowed to edit this post.” and other things like that (that’s not the only statement the system does). Also, adding an image from the media library results in a blank square trying to load the library, in vain.

And no, I don’t want to clear the cache because it messes up my everything else for a long time. This new nerd-invented thing of an “editor” is not worth it. It’s clumsy, un-intuitive, NON-userfriendly and what else. I’m truly frustrated beyond words, because my energy levels are very limited and I didn’t want to spend the little of them for stupid issues like this.

WP staff, PLEASE START LISTENING TO YOUR USERS!!!!!!!!!!

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t appreciate the staff’s unwillingness to answer our questions about wanting to switch back to the old editor. I am severely disappointed with the quality of customer service, especially the lack of any live chat or phone access with someone who could help.

“Barging in” is OK. This morning I found two-dozen messages regarding my thread. I am so happy to see that other folks are as frustrated as I am. I had a “chat” last evening with a support person who took me back to Classic. However, this morning I am faced with the new format and can’t get out of it. Yes, I hope WP will listen to our complaints and restore Classic as the default and make the other an alternate version. THANKS everyone for your messages.

Let me add my objection to the new Editor. It’s terrible. Why should I have to stop and think about what Block I want to use? The block for Classic is just awful too. I have been using WordPress for 14 years (you guys just let me know that today!) and you are pushing me away. It used to be so easy to bash out a post. Now that’s no longer possible. This is no longer a blogging platform. It’s turned into something for Instagrammers and people who want to display their shallow vanity.

“Barging in” is OK with me.

I’m an old lady, set in my ways at 85 years young. I write a lot of blog messages and blogging is good therapy in this time of stay home and stay safe. Yesterday, I had a web chat with a support person who directed me back to classic. I was grateful and expected I was again able to edit in classic. NO, this morning I was faced with the default editor and I can’t get back to the editing format I’m familiar with. ~~ Hey, WP staff, please listen to us and give us back our CLASSIC.

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been blogging on WordPress every day for nine years. This is the worst change imposed on us. I am not inclined to use blacks that triple the time to do a post, too prone to error, and unnecessarily complicated. The classic bloc does not work for me, give me back what I had and used all these past years.

    Thank you

  • Unknown's avatar

I agree: THIS IS THE WORST EDITOR I have experienced. I’ve blogged for years and sometimes three or four a day. I don’t do FaceBook, my blog allows friends and family to follow my activities. I have had about two-dozen responses to my first message and

      everyone

is dissatisfied. With this negative response in one-and-one-half days, why hasn’t WP send every subscriber an email apology? We pay our fee but they bully us to use the editor they dictate?? ~~~~ This morning I tried to prepare and publish a blog message but every step was difficult and frustrating–and the message isn’t the quality folks have come to expect from me.

  • Unknown's avatar

@lorraineeedwards I found a way to do it in my older blog. I’ve just had a look at yours and see your archive goes back years, so you should still be able to get to the Classic Editor. I’ve another blog that I’ve just posted to that explains how to do it if you want to have a look:

    https://inmyrealife.wordpress.com/2020/10/02/im-not-a-happy-bunny/

But newer blogs won’t be able to anymore.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve only been here two years but also for me this is the worst thing to happen. The new editor is far too complicated, all most of us want is to write some words and add an image or a youtube video, just a normal blogger. Why change a simple and easy editor into something so complicated and POINTLESS? I also agree with others, the “switch to classic editor” does NOT work.

  • Unknown's avatar

@valcolours Bless you! It works! I have Classic Editor again. Everyone else: BOOKMARK that URL once you get it. You can go straight to Classic Editor and post away happily again.

THANK YOU. I appreciate the tip about “bookmark” the URL. It didn’t occur to me. ~~~ Did you see the response to my message from Staff “macmanx”? He suggests “tips” to become acquainted with the new editor. No sympathy for those of us anxious to see the familiar Classic.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @ghostfire @lorraineeedwards

Not to mention the total cluelessness of telling us to clear our caches so we can use the new editor when the whole point of our posts here is that we don’t want to use the new editor.

I know the staff posting here are just following the orders they’ve been given from above, but really, would it kill them to slip a little sympathy into their broken record remarks?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Glad it helped.

If you bookmark the link, bear in mind you need to be logged into your account first.

However, sadly for people who have fairly new blogs (within the last couple of years or so), Classic Editor still isn’t available other than as the Classic Block in the Block Editor.
