I don't want a brand-new format

@ghostfire Some people are visual or auditory learners, others by reading, others by doing. It has nothing to do with the complexity or simplicity of the Editor. I just find that a full page of written instructions doesn’t fit all learning types and therefore the suggestion of the webinar.

If you primarily create content of text and images, have you tried just writing in the Block Editor at MySite without selecting any block? The default block is the Paragraph block and you can add images when starting a new block by hitting Enter and typing /image which will bring up a whole array of image insertion options. If you want Classic, then the Classic Block is available.

I’m sorry all, I’d like to continue discussing this, but if you have specific questions about using the Editor, best to open a separate thread and make sure to link to your website. And to all a good night.

  • We’ve got double threads on this. I’m going to merge them together.

  • Threads merged.

    Setting some boundaries:

    1. We can’t get rid of blocks / revert everything. We hear you, but that doesn’t change what we can do.

    2. We can take “this specific thing bothers me” type feedback, and will note it when we can spot it. You can help by refraining from the type of comments we can’t do anything about. We can leave the thread open so long as the feedback is constructive.

Thank you @justjennifer — I think the idea of a 30 minute webinar is fantastic, and we will pass that along.

    supernovia:

I disagree with your comment that “(WordPress can’t) change what we can do.” It was WordPress that got rid of the Classic Editor for users. Many longer term users like myself prefer the Classic version. WordPress could simply go back to allowing people to use either version – it was allowed up to now. Plus, I am paying for my account – perhaps make this an option for those paying for an account at least.

  • Unknown's avatar

I, too, am paying–for more than nine years. Does anyone know of another provider we can take our business to??

  • @mikecane, there’s a bit of history here:
    https://developer.wordpress.org/block-editor/handbook/history/

Including a survey of what people were doing with WordPress and what they needed. Remember this is a huge community effort, well beyond WordPress.com and Automattic.

I agree it would be nice to keep the default view as close to text editing as possible, with the ability to add blocks when you want to and not be distracted by them otherwise. I’ve noted this type of feedback before and will continue to pass it along as I can.

A few things that helped me with this: using the three dots in the upper right, I’ve chosen to pin the toolbar to the top. That way it’s not always hovering above the text. I also personally prefer spotlight mode OFF.

Regarding HTML: while it would be nice, I don’t see a way to just use straight up HTML while still maintaining compatibility going forward. But if there’s something you would want to do with HTML and can’t sort out with blocks, let us know.

I don’t understand this statement. What is it about blocks that prevents HTML? Wouldn’t the blocks have to create HTML?

    @supernovia

Thanks for your reply but I was being facetious in the midst of my ire at losing the classic editor to this new “thing”, going from the welcome sigh of the familiar lay out to what was essentially a confusingly minimalist one.

I should explain that not only am I slightly older than your average blogger but I am also Autistic, meaning I am slow on the uptake and I don’t adapt to change very well, especially when it takes me out of a routine that has become of comfort to me.

Therefore, to see something that is user friendly, handily laid out, easy to navigate and work with, and does everything I want it to without confusing my addled brain disappear, replaced by something empty, confusing, hides everything, makes it harder to do simple things, and has eliminated some of the functions I use that suit my needs, adding more unnecessary time to my posting experience, is like replacing a human care worker with a robot.

No doubt these whizz kids who do all their posting via mobile phone who want less clutter and more flash will be in their element, and more power to them, but for us older desktop PC users, this is not of any use to us. I know there is a concession to use the classic editor functions an basic layout in this new but that is still only part of what makes it so useful for many of us.

Currently, it takes me five minutes to add a new post (I write mine in Word then copy it over) but under this new editor, with having to faff about switching from this to that, trying to find things that were once laid out for me, or fiddle with because the function has changed, I’m looking at maybe two or three times that and for what?

Change is inevitable but in cases like WordPress where the editor is arguably the most vital facet of the entire platform, there are some things that need to be kept simple or at least rooted in the familiar framework, as not everyone can adapt to slick new procedures or fancy new tools with ease, nor do they have the time to
    play about with them.

If we have to be redirected to tutorial videos on how to use the new editor then I propose there is a flaw in the plan if the changes are that drastic, it requires a complete overhaul of our understanding of how to make a simple post. Gradual change for a smoother cross over is one thing, this is akin to replacing a Morris Minor with a Ferrari.

The amount of negative responses on these forums and beyond (i.e. social media) to me shows this is an ongoing battle between WP and its users – it’s not the first time the new editor has caused a kerfuffle and I doubt it will be the last, but I do object to the arrogance of WP in not making these changes optional for its users rather than mandatory as not everyone will be so well equipped to handle these changes.

Sorry for the old man rant but I needed to get that off my chest.

@mikecane or supernovia wrote a message with a lot of links. I–for one–never saw any of that information. I wasn’t included in a survey. Was I supposed to take time away for blogging–and other projects–to search the Web for information about the activities at WordPress?? From the tone of these messages, I am comforted that I’m not the only one who woke up October first to an editor they don’t want to use and no desire to learn. Give this 85-years-young woman her Classic editor.

  • Unknown's avatar

Today I gave your classic block a real test and I actually posted with it. The result is horrible! Really horrible. I can’t imagine why you’re eliminating the old editor as an option.

After twelve years, 8,357 posts, 5,942,656 views, and 124,178 comments, I’m going to have to quit blogging at this place.

I, am a “serious curmudgeon” and I had the same problem. I “tried” and failed; I “tried” again and had a miserable unacceptable (to my standards) message. Can someone suggest another provider because I’ll take my business elsewhere (after nine years and thousands of messages).

Oops, it was a mistake to try to make the word “serious” BOLD–and no way to go back and correct my error.

85-year-young-woman is following this thread closely.

    Hi Lorraine,

…and no way to go back and correct my error.

    I corrected it for you.

Can someone suggest another provider because I’ll take my business elsewhere (after nine years and thousands of messages).

Please understand that these forums are for assisting users with their WPcom websites. We’ll be happy to help you solve your site issues, but if you want to solicit suggestions for other blogging providers, the best place for that would be on your own website. Thanks for understanding.

But I will say this again, if your primary content is text and images, have you tried just writing in the Block Editor at MySite without selecting any block? Hello again folks, I’m coming back to something that @konvigilante shared earlier in this thread since it may have been overlooked:

I also had a time getting used to the new editor but i am gradually getting the hang of it.

A simple hack to get the old editor back is simply use the wordpress official app since it has the option to choose between the 2.

    WordPress.com Apps

I’ve just downloaded the desktop app for Windows and will give it a whirl in the next day or two. Cheers.

  • Unknown's avatar

So-before you all rush off to download the desktop app…the option to choose between the two editors (Block/Classic) exists only in the mobile apps, not the desktop app. Was worth a try.

  • Unknown's avatar

Would it be possible to make that option a desktop app too? That would solve a lot of problems.

  • Unknown's avatar

Just in case you missed this workaround –

Go to your DASHBOARD in WP ADMIN

    Scroll down to POSTS

Hover your mouse over POSTS then click on “ALL POSTS” from the pop out menu

At the top of the main window on the left hand side where it says “POSTS” is a button reading “ADD NEW” with a tiny arrow.

Click the arrow and a drop down menu appear with the option to use either the Block or the Classic Editor as shown in this pic :

Voila! Classic Editor is yours to use again! :-)

  • Unknown's avatar

Mine just says “add new” – there’s no arrow, unfortunately.

The “classic block” option is no good: it’s nothing like using the classic editor. I’ve found that I can use classic editor from the list of posts, but I have to create the post in the new format first. It’s impossible to use to do anything other than create the post – I’ve tried, but I just can’t use it. A lot of people have said how upset they are about the classic editor being removed – given this, please will you consider putting things back to how they were, so that people who prefer the block editor are free to do so but people who prefer to use the classic editor are free to use that? Thank you.

  • Unknown's avatar

Really? That is a bummer! I guess mine will be next to change then…
