I don't want a brand-new format

staff-blorbo Thanks for letting us know – however, I prefer the Classic Editor and do not want to use the new version as it is nowhere as good, nor as easy to use.

Hi @edwardbrain1 – While the original Classic WP Editor is now available for everyone in WP Admin, just be aware that it is likely a temporary solution since it is being made available via the Classic Editor plugin that WPcom installed for us. We users do not know how long it will be supported here.

So, if you choose to write in WP Admin’s Classic editor, start dabbling in the Classic block, https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/ or the full Block Editor https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/ in a test post or page. The more you use it, the easier it will become.

If you run into a specific issue while using the WordPress editor, please open a new forum thread and let us know what that is and what WPcom site it’s happening on. Thanks.

Just Jennifer. You. Are. Not. Listening.

I “dabbled” in the classic block for about a week. It is NOT easier than the classic editor.

The block editor is fine if you are selling shoes. I am not selling shoes.

I like my blog the way it is. The way my previous blog was before I started using WordPress.

The. Block. Editor. Is. Not. A. Better. Solution. For. All. Use-cases.

  • Please be nice here @zendodeb, Jennifer is a volunteer here and a user of WordPress.com like yourself. She doesn’t work here and is sharing both facts of the current situation and her opinion, she’s under no obligation to receive or act on feedback.

As mentioned earlier, you can now switch to the classic editor when writing/editing posts/pages in your site’s Dashboard: https://wordpress.com/support/dashboard/

I have been blogging for 10 years.
If classic editor is being phased out then I will need to find a different solution for subscribers.

@zendodeb – Glad you brought up shoes. You know, I ran with the same running shoes for probably 15 years. Then the manufacturer up and discontinued them. I couldn’t find those shoes in any shop within a 50 mile radius of my house (this was in the days before the public internet). So I had to find different running shoes. The first few days were really difficult/painful as my body adjusted, then after a week it was somewhat easier, and after a month I didn’t notice the difference any longer.

The block editor is easier in comparison. I did not say that it’s easier than the Classic editor. I said, “The more you use it, the easier it will become.”

The Classic editor in the MySite dashboard was an in-house product that has been retired and WPcom has indicated that they will not bring it back. At the moment, you can continue with the original WP Editor in WP Admin. This is the editor we used here on WPcom prior to the introduction of the Calypso/MySite Editor in 2015. You should be familiar with that editor given the age of your account. But at some point that Editor will no longer be available either, so use this transition period as time to become familiar with the Block editor and you’ll be ahead of the game when the Classic Editor is finally retired. Cheers.

It is a wonderment that WordPress is so determined to get rid of the classic editor. It can’t be much of an administrative or financial burden to keep the thing available — like it is now. Why is there so much enthusiasm for killing it?

  • Unknown's avatar

    True,

If this new editing block is so much easier and better, then eventually we all would want to use it. It is amazing to me that there seems to be no concern on their part that we feel this is not a good solution for us …

Please dont mess with the comfortable. Im too stressed to try something new. I can get to my blog but cant write! I dont want any new system! Please put it back the way it was!

Hello again folks, If you are not already subscribed to the WordPress.com blog, I highly recommend it. There are two posts there that might help explain this change:

Say Hello to the WordPress Block Editor

The Classic Editing Experience is Moving, Not Leaving

The “New and Improved” editor is awful. I love the Classic Editor, why not keep it as an option for those who want it?

I worked in the software industry for 18-years and I’ve been though for too many “Improvements” implemented by programmers that the end users really did not like at all. It’s a “We know better that you do” attitude…

WordPress, listen to your end users!

  • Hi folks, this thread has devolved again. We’ll try to sift through it for information we can work with. As a reminder, we’re looking for feedback that will make the block editor more comfortable for you. I understand the frustration, we just can’t do a lot with it.

The block editor is an open source project made by a community. And you are a part of that. Let’s channel the energy of this thread into thoughtful feedback that will make the new editor better. Remember to mind our forum community standards as you interact. Thank you!

well, then I guess I have to be done with WordPress. The change is not wanted and totally frustrating. Thanks for the ride. Have a good day.

So that’s finally one person who’s not staff or a moderator who likes the new editor. I’m glad it’s working out for you.

I’m currently making use of the classic “block” because new text block thingy straight up does not have the formatting features I need. Still waiting to hear how this is an “improvement.”

My blog is my business and the only source of my income; if features I need are stripped out and replaced with nothing, that’s a real problem for me. If they actually are planning to completely get rid of the classic editor in every form I’m gonna need to find a new host. I would really, really prefer not to do that, it’s a headache I don’t need and until this specific issue I have always been very happy with WordPress. Please just let us use the editor that works.

  • Unknown's avatar

webbonomicon wrote and I respond with a “me too.” I use so many features in the Classc that many folks don’t even know about. My blog will be so bland if I am forced to use the new editor. I, too, will look for another host. THANKS for your message.

Just want to add my voice to the “new editor sucks” crowd. Classic is intuitive. I can start using it straightaway without tutorials.

This new thing, what even is it? I had to look up instructions on how to upload an image! It’s not intuitive at all, it’s complicated and tedious, and just no. No one wants this.

  • I’m currently making use of the classic “block” because new text block thingy straight up does not have the formatting features I need

    @webbonomicon
there is a specific formatting option you are not finding in the classic block that you had access to before? If you can tell us more about it so we can take a closer look?

(Edit: please file a new thread here, @webbonomicon, and let us know which formatting option you’re having trouble finding.)

  • Hi folks, I understand you’re frustrated.

As a reminder, several years ago when we released our calypso editor, there was a lot of complaining then, too. It got better because people gave us specific feedback about the parts that were bothering them. And the block editor came about because of other issues people were running into. We needed to upgrade to work around them.

We do want to help make it more usable for you though, and it’s hard to do that unless we know specifically what about it is giving you trouble. So my recommendation:

    – Use the block editor as much as you are able.
    – Use classic blocks if you need to
    – Use the classic wp-admin editor if needed
    – You can also just copy and paste text if that’s easier

    Then:

    – Open a thread if you run into a specific issue so we can work to resolve it.

Again, please be as specific as possible. Instead of “It’s too complicated” for example, say “I just want to write posts and add images, but when I try to add an image here’s what happens instead…” and then explain it so we can help sort this out.

Thanks in advance. I’ll close this thread for now.
