I found the correct place once I realized how to FIND the Dashboard (look for “WP Dashboard” – rather small letters in left hand column).
I was in “Stats”and didn’t understand how to get out.Once in Dashboard, go to Appearance. Hover there, and chooseWidgets. This gives you MANY more options than if you go to “Customize” and look up widgets there.

Hello there,
Basically, I want to be able to create columns.
Then I can put a photo and short bio in side bar on Welcome page, AND imrove the look of my About page – 3 columns of info instead a big blob .You’ve opted for a theme that allows either a full-width page, or a main column with a sidebar that contains widgets.
If you want multiple columns, you’ll have to choose a theme that is set up to do this:
https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/staff-picks+many-columns/
Or, you can add HTML columns to your page. If you are not familiar with HTML, you can use a generator such as the one found here:
http://html-generator.weebly.com/css-multi-column-generator.html
Once in Dashboard, go to Appearance. Hover there, and chooseWidgets. This gives you MANY more options than if you go to “Customize” and look up widgets there.
I see that you’ve added your widget column. If I can help further with this, please let me know! You can add and remove any widgets you’d like…I can assist if you get stuck along the way.
One of the Problems with WordPress is that there are several places in which you can address a problem. It’s confusing. Not all the places will have all the same information or options
We’re in the midst of improving and streamlining this situation, so it’s easier to use. We have a classic editor, and a new editor. Soon, you’ll be able to choose whichever you like, and all your needs should be met there. If you have any ideas or suggestions, I highly suggest you add them here:

It is helpful for us to understand what our users want!
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

Thanks Robyn. I lost a draft the other day that has killed me. THis is the second time this has happened to me on WordPress – because unless I hit “save” your system does not automatically save the thing I have been typing on. I ahave been having troubles w computer – and it will suddenly close a screen wo warning. So, I lost all my changes.
I think the answer is no, but do you know a way to recover that typing?

Thanks so much!
I only want columns on the “About” page. So I will look at HTLM. No, I have no idea what that is.
I think Plane will work for me – and it took me a LOOOONG time to find it. I would like to add a background color, but I can live without it.My biggest biggest problems now are these:
1) I need to be able to modify JUST the color of the BLOG TITLE – the title of the blog. It is unreadable. Working with a templette is frustrating. The templette wants it grey. I need it to be black. OR I need to be able to lighten my header photo.
2) I just moved the blog Embracing chaos from Weebly to WordPress. I need to know how to ADD OLD POSTS from my Weebly site to this blog. Would I put them on a “page”? Then attach this to the Archives? how?
3) once this is done, I need to make it so that the site that's listed reads “embracingchaos.net” and not whatever crazy thing it's under now. Somehow I got it with WordPress as “embracingchaosblogdotcom.wordpress.com” Some kind of a handle.
Can I make it embracingchaosblog.com too?Thanks Robyn!

Hi there Wystan!
Thank you so much for your response. I’ve addressed your issues below:
I only want columns on the “About” page. So I will look at HTLM. No, I have no idea what that is. I think Plane will work for me – and it took me a LOOOONG time to find it. I would like to add a background color, but I can live without it.
Once you create your HTML columns, if you need any help at all with the installation on your About page, please let me know.
Since you’re new with HTML, here’s some starter-information for using that code at WordPress.com:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/beginning-html/Also, because you have the Premium upgrade, you can adjust your background color. You would do this with another type of code called CSS. This is something I can assist you with.
If you’d like to give this a try, click this link to visit your site’s Customizer. Then, click CSS in your right-hand menu. In the CSS Revisions box, please paste the following underneath all existing text:
.site-content {
background-color: #f0f8ff;
}body, button, input, select, textarea {
background-color: #f0f8ff;
}Then Save your changes.
I chose a light blue so you’d be able to view the adjustment. The light blue is represented by the #f0f8ff in the code I provided. To choose your own hex-color code, you can do so here:
http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_colorpicker.asp
1) I need to be able to modify JUST the color of the BLOG TITLE – the title of the blog. It is unreadable. Working with a templette is frustrating. The templette wants it grey. I need it to be black. OR I need to be able to lighten my header photo.
If you want to lighten your header photo, you’ll have to do that in photo editing software, not here at WordPress.com. If you don’t have your own photo editor, you can search online for “free online photo editor” and you’ll find lots of options.
If you want to make the adjustment to a black font, you can use CSS again. Follow the instructions I gave above, and add the following below your existing code:
.site-title a, .site-title a:hover {
color: #000;
}.wf-active .site-description {
color: #000;
}Again, save your changes to make them permanent.
3) once this is done, I need to make it so that the site that’s listed reads “embracingchaos.net” and not whatever crazy thing it’s under now. Somehow I got it with WordPress as “embracingchaosblogdotcom.wordpress.com” Some kind of a handle. Can I make it embracingchaosblog.com too?
Here is how WordPress.com site names work with custom domains:
If you would like to adjust your WordPress.com site name:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/However, since nobody will see your WordPress.com site name, only your custom domain (embracingchaos.net), there really isn’t a need to change it. However, you do need to complete your domain mapping for embracingchaos.net. To do so, please click below:
https://embracingchaosblogdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
Then, select embracingchaos.net and make it your Primary Domain. Then, click Update.
I think the answer is no, but do you know a way to recover that typing?
Could you send me a link to the page or post you were working on, and I can see if your revisions were saved anywhere? Thank you.
Lots of instructions above! Work your way through, and drop me a note at the end, letting me know if questions popped up. Thanks!
-
Thanks Robyn! I used CSS codes before successfully – so I am mildly familiar and will just follow along the instructions.
-
Hi again,
Oh, terrific! Glad to hear it. I hope the CSS works well for you.
If you have any questions along the way, please do let us know!
All the best.

Robyn —
You gave me so much great info – I will search to see, but did you tell me how to attach or reblog or move my old posts to this new site? I don't want to lose that writing!
I would be moving from Weebly which looks like it can be located here:
http://www.weebly.com/weebly/userHome.php#_=_To my new site with you
embracingchaos.netThanks
Wystan

Royn –
The color picker worked GREAT!
But the background color change code you gave me for the CSS didn’t work — -

I have moved my old posts to a “page” on the site. What do yo think? Is this the best way to do it?

Hiya Wystan!
Good to hear from you :)
I would be moving from Weebly which looks like it can be located here: http://www.weebly.com/weebly/userHome.php#_=_
To my new site with you embracingchaos.netWordPress will accept imports from several different blogging platforms. However, Weebly may not have an export tool that allows you to create the XML file you’d need to import into embracingchaos.net.
I suggest writing to Weebly’s support desk here:
http://hc.weebly.com/hc/en-us/requests/newTell them you’re moving from Weebly to WordPress.com and need all of your content in an XML file.
Let me know if you/they have questions along the way!
But the background color change code you gave me for the CSS didn’t work —
I am seeing that your background is light blue. It appears the only thing that isn’t light blue is the background of your widgets.
To make this adjustment: go to your customizer. Then, click CSS in your right-hand menu. In the CSS Revisions box, please paste the following underneath all existing text:
#secondary .widget {
background: #f0f8ff;
}Then Save your changes.
If the blue color I chose is too light for your liking, change every instance of #f0f8ff to #c0deed.
I have moved my old posts to a “page” on the site. What do yo think? Is this the best way to do it?
I only see three-or-so posts pasted onto that page. If this is all you need to transfer, I’d actually paste each Weebly post into a new WordPress.com post. You can even change the Publish date so it displays the original post date, if you’d like. Then your visitors will be able to scroll through all your posts, without having to visit a completely separate page.
Let me know how all of this works out for you, and if I can assist further! Thanks so much :)

Hi Robyn!
Thanks for getting back to me!

“I only see three-or-so posts pasted onto that page. If this is all you need to transfer, I'd actually paste each Weebly post into a new WordPress.com post. You can even change the Publish date so it displays the original post date,”
There are about twelve. I just manually moved some more. I agree, I'd rather have them in a regular format. REALLY I want them archived under their month.If I paste each old post into a new WP post, and date as originally, how will WP store them?
will WP put them in chrono order??
don't they need to be in chrono order for readers sake??About blue background: What?!? I do not see this when I go to my site. It's white.

Hey Wystan!
If I paste each old post into a new WP post, and date as originally, how will WP store them? will WP put them in chrono order?? don’t they need to be in chrono order for readers sake??
How do you change the date?
To change the date, open one of your posts in the editor. For example, click here:
https://wordpress.com/post/83399189/83/?optin
Where you see the Publish Status, in the right-hand column, change the publish date under the “Scheduled” heading, as seen here:
https://cloudup.com/c3842SfeuxkOnce you’ve changed this to your preferred date, you will click the button under your content box to save it. The button, which used to say Update, will now look like this:
https://cloudup.com/igeP3zycvzUClick that box and the date will become permanent for the post. It will be “filed” in your archive under whatever date you’ve given it.
About blue background: What?!? I do not see this when I go to my site. It’s white.
That’s odd, as I’m seeing your site as light blue:
https://cloudup.com/c9qPz2laFjqIf possible, send me a screenshot of the way you’re seeing the background color of your site, so I can better understand the issue. You can simply upload the screenshot to your Media Library, like any other image, and I’ll be able to access it from there.
The page at the following link has some helpful tips for taking screenshots:
Just let me know when there’s something I should look at.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much!
-
Well, screen shot seems like a waste of time – it's white.
Running out of town – will try to get to this before, if not then when I get back on Friday!
Thanks, as always!

Hello there!
The screenshot will help, whenever you have a moment.
I’ve had other colleagues look at the site on their computers/browsers as well. We’re all seeing a background color.
When you send your screenshot, if you could also tell me what version Operating System and Browser you’re using, that will be helpful. You can find out that info, simply by clicking here:
https://www.whatismybrowser.com/
It’s also possible that your browser is running an extension or a plugin that is interfering with your display. To see if this is the case, here are Google Chrome’s steps for temporarily disabling extensions:
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/187443?hl=en
And the instructions for disabling plugins:
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/142064?hl=en
Let me know the results, so we can get to the bottom of this issue for you! Thank you :)

Robyn —
Partly thanks to my daughter (home from college this weekend) I have now saved a screen shot to my media library.
She says that the page is very, very pale blue on her laptop —
I looked at it and find it so pale blue that it is hardly worth calling blue – but ok.More important than this, the next PROBLEM on my horizon is how to collapse the past blogs so the reader can look through the list of them quickly, not read through the list of them one by one.
Also – I signed up for facebook, twitter, tumler buttons, and none of them are being displayed.
Why would that be?
At least the “Follow” button is still large and easy to find!
