I don’t want avatars appearing in comments on my blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I have avatars appearing next to people’s comments on my blog, but I don’t want them, especially the ghostly every-person one which appears next to people who aren’t logged into WordPress.

I understand that there are some themes which don’t allow avatars – could you tell me which ones they are? Or is there a way to keep my chosen theme (K2-lite) and get rid of avatars?

    Thank you.

The avatars in the recent comments widget can be turned off in Presentation > Widgets and then clicking the options for Recent Comments. In avatar size you select “no avatars”.

I’m not sure but I don’t think you can turn them off elsewhere in your blog. With the K2-lite theme, you don’t see the blank avatars as much as with other themes… it tends to just display the images of people with avatars.

Thank you, cjwriter. That worked like a dream. As soon as I saw your reply I realised that I really meant in the Recent Comments widget, not all through my blog. I’m much happier with the way it looks now.

    Hello

Is there any way to give frequent visitors who are not logged into wordpress an avatar? Thanks.

No, unfortunately anyone commenting has to have a WP username to have an avatar. But that’s simple to do; they can sign up for an account without having to have a blog. You can even send them an invite to make it very.

One sidenote: it might be possible in the future. Automattic recently acquired Gravatars, which allows people to have the same avatar across different sites. If they have a gravatar, I suppose it’s possible they might be able to be seen on WP at some stage even if they don’t have a username, though I think it’s unlikely… we haven’t heard how Gravatars are going to be implemented yet, so it’s anyone’s guess.

I see that gravatars have been implemented in the comments but not in the Recent Comments widget.

hello, i dont want my avatar to be seen on other people blog…how can i avoid it? or can i delete my avatar pic?

If you want to keep you avatar, just make sure you are not logged in to wordpress when making comments. As an alternate, you can upload a blank avatar which will just show a white square: http://faq.files.wordpress.com/2007/03/blank-avatar.jpg. Just go to users > your profile, upload the blank, and then click “update profile.”

By the way, you will have to download the blank avatar and then upload it from your computer.

I just noticed on yesterday that the avatars and my username was not link properly in the comment widget. Anyone can help?:

  • Unknown's avatar

Avatar display is not retroactive. If you left comments before you uploaded an avatar they will not display one. Your username above is currently linked to your wordpress.com blog and that means that there should be no problem now, provided that you are logged into wordpress.com when you leave comments. If this problem persists then after the holidays you may need to contact support for help.

If you want to link your blog URL to your username on comments, go to your dashboard > users > click on “your profile” and then in the website field, enter your blog URL and then click “update profile.”

The wordpress.com username is already linked to the wordpress.com blog and the avatar is now displaying on the top comment in the Recent Posts widget in the sidebar. I think this issue has been “resolved” but the blogger has not returned to say so as yet.

His username in his comments (on his blog) though was not linked to his blog, so I was assuming that was what he wanted to do.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hhmmmm … his username was linked to his blog when I first looked at it here in the forum. In fact, I clicked it to find the blog. But the issue does seem to be resolved at this point and that’s good news. :)

Thank you for your helps and my profile has updated. May be the problem starts when the avatar and profile was not entered my blog url.

I home this will solve the problem to my comment widget when i make a new comment later.

You’re welcome from me. You have two profiles, one for your blog, and the one for here in the forums. Your forum profile was linked.

Do remember that your avatar and link to your blog only work on wordpress.com blogs, and only when you are logged in to wordpress.com. Also, your previous comments will not update with the URL. On your own blog, you can go in and edit your comments and add the URL in, but on other blogs you cannot.
