I don’t want to have my domain (santacruzdogs.com) through WordPress, and my website through Wix. I want it all through Wix so it’s easier to manage. Why can’t I cancel it without being able to use the URL elsewhere?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sorry, I am confused as to what my problem is. I thought my domain and everything was already through Wix, I guess my domain isn’t and is through WordPress. Can I switch it? I tried switching it to Wix and was told WordPress wouldn’t allow it.
I guess I could just pay for that through WordPress yearly, but last I paid was $26, and it’s telling me $99 for Premium which I didn’t have before. Now it’s telling me “Domain Mapping – yearly subscription” is $13. Is that all I need to renew?
I apologize for the stupid questions, I am not good with domain stuff.

Hi there,
Your domain, santacruzdogs.com, expired on 16 August and is currently in redemption with our registrar. It is not possible to transfer a domain that is expired or in redemption, as you no longer own that domain.
During the redemption period the registrar can attempt to sell the domain at private auction, and only if they are unable to sell the domain will it be released again and will you be able to register it with Wix. There is at least another two to three weeks before the domain will be released, though it could take longer as the registrar has the right to use their own discretion in this matter.
If you don’t want to wait and run the risk of losing the domain I can try to recover it for you, but we must pay the registrar $80 to restore a domain from redemption, so I will need you to agree to and pay this fee before I can attempt a recovery. Once the domain is restored to your account and renewed you will be able to transfer it to Wix.

So even if I don’t want to transfer to Wix, the domain still isn’t mine? I had thought I already transferred to Wix months ago, and thought I still owned it so I didn’t realize this could happen. Definitely won’t be using WordPress after this.

The domain expired. That happened because you did not pay for the renewal in time. That is how domains work. You only register it for a year at a time and if you don’t renew it you stop being the owner.
If you want to get the domain back we might still be able to help with that as I explained above. Let me know if you want to attempt that.

I do understand that, but I thought k had transferred it to Wox already and paid through them to keep/renew the domain. Not sure what I paid for then.
No, I don’t want to spend $80 to try to get something back I already thought was mine. Especially since it’s a not-for-profit organization and the monthly fees I’m paying were too much to begin with. I don’t understand what I’m paying for now then through Wix?
Thanks for your help.

You are most likely paying them for hosting, but I’ve double-checked the logs and I don’t see any evidence that there was ever an attempted transfer of that domain.
You did have the domain mapped to Wix, but that’s not the same thing as transferring the registration.
It can be a few more weeks before the domain is released, but it does appear to be in the final phase of redemption now. You can try checking periodically if you’re able to register it. If you’re lucky you might be able to get it back that way, and then register it directly with Wix.

I really do appreciate your help and now have a better understanding of the difference between a domain and hosting.
I registered a new domain with Wix, so I will use that now.
Thank you for your help!
