I erroneously added a new blog instead of changing my blog's name…

  • Unknown's avatar

I want my blog to have a new name and assumed that I’d have to make a new blog and transfer my content…..before I realized I could change the name of the blog I already have.

Now I see a warning when I try to delete the new blog that the name won’t be available in the future if I delete it……WTF? Am I too late and now I have to transfer my content?

The intention is for the site to be upgraded to a custom domain eventually.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Why don’t you use the export and import function to move your content?
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

The intention is for the site to be upgraded to a custom domain eventually.

Also note that when you are domain mapping it doesn’t matter at all what the underlying .wordpress.com sub domain URL is.

    How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

    Thanks for the fast reply!!!

In the short term, is there any disadvantage to export/import vs renaming an existing site? (Aside from the extra clicks.)

There is no advantage at all to changing the blog address where your posts reside unless you pay for a domain https://en.support.wordpress.com/all-about-domains/ or a site redirect https://wordpress.com/domains/add/site-redirect/

Every link to the original URLs no matter where they appear in search engine results and on the internet as well as every internal link to your earlier content within the site will be broken. When clicked they will all produce 404 (page not found) errors, rather than connecting to the content at the new address.

All authority the original URLs earned that contributed to the site’s page rank will be gone. In essence, changing an address without purchasing a domain or a site redirect means you are throwing that away and the blog begins from zero. Thereafter you will be hard pressed to publish enough content rapidly to drive the search results to the broken links down in the SERPs (search engine page results).

It will take up to 3 months before search engines re-index the content under the new URLs. Then the content will begin to appear in search engines results and when clicked those links will direct to the content rather than being broken links.

    Thank you! And: Hm. ;)

Let me see if I have this straight…

Keeping reeformadness.wordpress.com and not changing it is fine and advisable even if the new .com domain doesn’t match at all.

Folks will follow an old “reeformadness” link and end up at “reefsuccess.com” once the new .com is in place.

I guess what I may miss out (is this even a big deal?) on is that anyone who happens to look at the new name (reefsuccess.wordpress.com) will now either have a dud to look at if I abandon it, or a 404 to look at if I delete the accidentally-created reefsuccess.wordpress.com blog. (Or I get to maintain a semi-useless reefsuccess.wordpress.com in parallel with the real reefsuccess.com.)

Is there maybe an advantage to this that I’m missing? :)

Thank you for that – and all your answers so far! :)

I think I forgot to mention along the way that I did perform the import from the old site to the new site just to try it out and it was pretty smooth! Just took a while due to the media I guess.

For now I’m just keeping up the old site until I figure out which way to go on this issue, but I’m glad that I’d gone though the process once now. :)

And thanks again for getting me pointed in the right directions!
