I feel tricked
-
When setting up my domain I was assured that my domain account was called ‘theinnovativestudent.com’ instead what appears on my screen is ‘theinnovativestudentdotcom.com’ which sounds ridiculous and was not what I agreed to pay for

Maybe you simply don’t understand how domain mapping works and how long it takes for domain name propagation ie. up to 72 hours.
In order to map to a domain URL one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.
All that changes when you are domain mapping is the URL and nothing else. The content stays exactly where it is. What domain mapping does its create a seamless transfer between the underlying .wordpress.com blog URLs to the new domain URLs no matter where they are on the internet. Visitors who click the underlying .wordpress.com blog URLs will be seamlessly redirected to the exact same content under the new domain URLs.
Please read Domains: Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
See here if you do not own a domain

See here if you already have a website you don’t want to affect, and you want to add a blog to it under a subdomain (for example, blog.yourgroovydomain.com) see here http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/
Your payment methods are here https://en.support.wordpress.com/payment/
Your upgrade history will be here Dashboard > Store> My Upgrades
https://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/Your billing history will be at Dashboard > Store > Billing History
https://en.support.wordpress.com/billing-history/After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

I tagged this thread for a Staff follow-up. This is what I found:
theinnovativestudent.com is hosted by Automattic (Automattic Inc owns wordpress.com and wild west domains is the domain name registrar they use)
WHOIS: Click Here
IP Address: 192.0.78.24
Name Servers:
ns3.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns1.wordpress.comhttp://theinnovativestudentdotcom.wordpress.com is already correctly redirecting to http://theinnovativestudent.com/
-
It can take as long as 72 hours for DNS changes to become widely available. If you’re still not seeing your site loading at http://theinnovativestudent.com/, please wait a few more hours, clear your browser cachehttp://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clear-your-cache-and-cookies, and try again.
It is not unusual for the last place to flush their DNS caches to be your own ISP. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during this stage is to be patient.

re: the front page error message found on every new .wordpress.com blog
Nothing Found
It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help. There is nothing wrong with your site. By default the front page of the blog is the only page that will display all published posts on it. As soon as you publish a post not a page the front page error message and searchbox that appears on every new WordPress.COM blog will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
I recommend using the step by step tutorial linked to the bottom of your Admin page at https://learn.wordpress.com
See also the “Video Quick Start” tutorial http://en.support.wordpress.com/video-quick-start/
The only relevant support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also linked to on the bottom of your Admin page.

Hi @jdonohoewalker,
Looks like your base *.wordpress.com address has a “dotcom” in it, but I can see the public url shows simply as theinnovativestudent.com .
If you want to change the base address too (which is only visible to you when you’re administering the site) let us know; we’ll help you through.
Let us know if you need any other help!

Oh, also, since the domain was registered here, no need to worry about changing name servers. We take care of that for you. It can take a few hours for you to see the effect if you tried visiting the domain before it was fully registered, but rest assured, it will work for you as soon as your computer forgets the old destination. And it works for everyone else already.
