who will ultimately own the unique domain i am about to purchase to use with m y annual plan here?

  • Hi there,

No one owns a domain in the sense you describe here.

Top level domains, like .com, belong to and are controlled by an organisation called a registry. When you buy a domain, like example.com, though a domain registrar like us, you’re actually just buying the exclusive right from the registry to use that specific domain name for a period of one year, with the option to renew that right each year.

Once you’ve bought the domain, you can do with it what you want. If you don’t want to host it with us, you can point it to another host the moment you’ve bought it, and as long as you’ve owned it for at least 60 days you can even transfer your domain registration away from us to another registrar. Whether or not you’ve paid for a year on a WordPress.com upgrade plan is irrelevant – that’s an agreement between just you and us, while your domain registration is an agreement between you and the registry, with us just being the intermediary. So you don’t need to wait until the end of your upgrade plan with us to do something like transfer your domain away.

But if the one year on your domain is up and you don’t pay to renew it a second year, you lose your exclusive right to the domain, the domain goes back in the control of the registry, and they release it so that anyone can buy that domain again.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
