I hate your new format
-
When I try to construct a new post and copy and paste a link this comes up: ‘This block has encountered an error and cannot be previewed’. I want the old format back.

Hi there, I’m sorry the hear you are struggling.
I want to make sure I understand you perfectly. And are your site on WordPress.com or are you using the open source (self hosted) version of WordPress?
Are you trying to copy a link into your post? If this is the case what is the link you trying to paste?
You can use the old classic editor if you would like to.
you can find more info by following these links.

Hi there,
If your site is hosted with WordPress.com:
Copy-paste in the block editor works exactly the same as in the classic editor, but this issue may sort itself out if you try using a different browser to edit your site. You can find out more about adding links at https://wordpress.com/support/links/#adding-links-to-posts-pages-and-widgets
The Classic Editor is still available in WP Admin.

There is also a block called ‘Classic Block’ (you can find it by searching in the insert block search bar, or under the Formatting heading) which works in the same way as the Classic Editor. You can find out more about this block in the link @zazter posted:

If you have more feedback or questions about Blocks, head to the Forum thread https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/feedback-thread-for-the-block-editor/.If you use the open-source WordPress software:
You’ll need to go to their forum to get help: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
If you want to know more about the differences between WordPress.com and the WordPress software you can read the support post:
