I have a .ca site NOT a .com site (please change it)

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, my old website was urbandsafarirescue.ca, my NEW website is urbansafari.CA but on my domain name page it shows up as urbansafari.COM. I use GoDaddy as my host, could this have been screwed up when the change was initially made? And is this also causing issues with my email set up?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I’m seeing your WordPress.com website display with the URL http://urbansafarirescue.ca/.

Can I assume that you solved this issue?

  • Unknown's avatar

I see that too, but when I go my my store, in my domains, I see urbansafari.com, urbansafarirescue.ca and usrs.wordpress.com.
I have set the first one as my primary (even though the .com and .ca is still an issue) the name I registered was urbansafari.ca
And my email (email visible only to moderators and staff) is not working so I think it is related to the site name confusion?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Just to be clear:
I do not want to use the OLD website name:
    urbansafarirescue.ca
I want to use the NEW website name:
    urbansafari.ca
    Thanks

  • You currently have three domain options:

    -urbansafarirescue.ca
    -urbansafari.com
    -or the default usrs.wordpress.com

You do not have urbansafari.ca set up as a mapped domain. So you would need to get that set up if you wanted to use it as per your last message above.

Did you set up domain mapping for urbansafari.com by accident when you meant to set up urbansafari.ca?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,
Would that be something that was done via GoDaddy (as my host)?
I don’t recall doing that on my own.
I merged two accounts here on WordPress.
Can I re-map it if it was my fault?
    Thanks

  • Domain mapping is an upgrade here at WordPress.com. It is used for when you have a domain registered elsewhere and want to use it with your WordPress.com account. Mapping cannot be set up anywhere but WordPress.com.

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay I thought this was set up for the new account.
Is there a walk-through for this?
And thank you for the info, much appreciated.

  • I can help you out.

So, just to make sure I am understanding this.

-You have urbansafari.ca registered somewhere (GoDaddy?)

-You do not have urbansafari.com registered anywhere

-urbansafari.ca is the domain you would like to use for usrs.wordpress.com

    Is that correct?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oh great!
    And in answer to above:
Yes, urbansafari.ca is registered with GoDaddy (and they are hosting our WordPress site)
No, urbansafari.com is not registered anywhere
Yes, urbansafari.ca is the domain I want to use for usrs.wordpress.com
    Thanks again

  • Okay, so that is set up on our end (urbansafari.ca pointing to usrs.wordpress.com)

Now, please go to GoDaddy’s site and log into the control panel. You will need to update the name servers as below:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

For more information, please visit the help documentation provided by the registrar and our support page:

Let me know if you have any questions!

    Hello rootjosh,
Okay, I made those updates and I am waiting now to see if the issue is solved. Will this fix the email issue, too? Or is that something else?
    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello rootjosh,
I don’t think that helped actually.
Now I am seeing the OLD website: urbansafariRESCUE.ca
    Our new site is:
    urbansafari.ca

I merged the two accounts about a month ago – then the new site domain was added (urbansafari.ca) and I was using the Tempera template.
    This is pretty frustrating.
    Help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • I am seeing urbansafari.ca point correctly to your usrs.wordpress.com as you requested WordPress.com site.

It can take 24-48 hours for domain/DNS changes to propagate throughout the internet. It typically happens faster than that, but it really depends on your ISPs update frequency. If you are still not seeing the correct site appear after 48 hours has elapsed, please contact me again.

You have two options for email using a custom domain:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/add-email/

    and

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/

Take a look through those pages and let me know if you have any further questions. I’ll be happy to help.

    Hi there rootjosh,
Okay, I believe the domain change is done. My premium theme: Tempera is now gone, and the original template Mixfolio is there instead. I can’t even find the Tempera template in WP themes (?!)
All the work I did is also gone. I downloaded the Tempera theme but I am not sure what to do with it at this point, it is in a zipfile on my computer.
Do you think the two accounts that I merged in WordPress – became unmerged? I used a tutorial on WordPress after I used the cPanel login with GoDaddy and saw that we had 2 accounts and not one.
I have not even looked at the email issue as my main concern right now is making sure the template and site are configured correctly.
    Thanks

  • My premium theme: Tempera is now gone, and the original template Mixfolio is there instead.

Themes can’t be uploaded to blogs hosted on WordPress.com. They can only be uploaded to self-hosted blogs running on WordPress.org software.

We offer over 210 themes, both free themes and premium themes created by leading theme companies. You can view all of our themes and filter them by specific criteria here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/

All the work I did is also gone.

Can you explain what you mean by this? Do you mean posts and pages you made?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I had WordPress.org software on one of the TWO accounts I had with WordPress, (remember I merged two accounts?) the other one has disappeared and the login does not work, my cached page no longer points to that webpage and instead it goes to the new urbansafari.ca – with no Tempera template – and 26 pages gone.
I think I should have you reverse whatever it was you did (urbansafari.ca pointing to usrs.wordpress.com) and then I will call GoDaddy and remove the info on the name severs: NS1.WORDPRESS.COM NS2.WORDPRESS.COM NS3.WORDPRESS.COM and repoint them back the way they were. Or do you have any other ideas? It is frustrating having to wait 24 hours between postings here, and so far it’s been 8 days working on making this right.

  • Yes, I had WordPress.org software on one of the TWO accounts I had with WordPress, (remember I merged two accounts?)

Just so we’re on the same page, any sites or accounts that you had on your self hosted WordPress.org blogs are not connected to WordPress.com. Just so I’m understanding you, can explain exactly what you mean by “merged two accounts”? What actions did you take?

    with no Tempera template

No matter what, Tempura will not be available on WordPress.com. If that theme is crucial for your site, and I understand if it is, you will need to return to a self hosted setup.

    and 26 pages gone.

Did you export this content from your old self-hosted site and import it into your WordPress.com site? If you did not, it wouldn’t be here.

Or do you have any other ideas?

Undoing the domain mapping would work, and I can do that for you. But you should be able to access your old self-hosted WordPress.org site without doing that. You might explain the situation to the GoDaddy support team and ask them how. If you say “I have hosting space through godaddy, but I have changed the domain that I was using to point to a WordPress.com site. Is there still a way to access my old WordPress install on GoDaddy?”

Thanks for the quick response rootjosh.
A little recap history and then answers to your questions:
HISTORY: I am building a site for Urban Safari Rescue Society, at first they wanted to use the old (existing) domain urbansafariRESCUE.ca to create the site but then they decided to create a shorter domain name urbansafari.ca. An USRS staff member went to Godaddy and registered the new domain name. She had already setup 26 pages using the WP Mixolio template AND she also paid for the Premium WordPress package).
    1. On January 8 we set up the WordPress hosting account with GoDaddy, I used the GoDaddy Linux cPanel login set up, AND on January 8 I merged our 2 WordPress accounts using the duplicator by following these WP Forum instructions: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/combining-two-wordpress-account?replies=7
I did this because the WordPress site for urbansafariRESCUE.ca had 26 pages set up by the USRS staff person and I did not want to lose the work that she had done (but never published).
The merging of the 2 accounts seemed successful and I then downloaded both the Tempera template and the Parabola templates to see which one USRS liked best and we decided to use Tempera.
I made the change to Tempera and had already uploaded photos, made changes to the header, added text, etc., and modified the Tempera template when I discovered 2 things: Staff at USRS told me the email, (email visible only to moderators and staff) was not working and when I went into the Dashboard, Store, My Domain settings it showed urbansafari.COM along with the old domain urbansafariRESCUE.ca and of course usrs.wordpress.com instead of the new domain name urbansafari.ca
I hope this makes the whole issue clearer?
Right now I cannot login to my working cached page that went to the Tempera dashboard and instead after refreshing it shows me the old Mixfolio dashboard.
My NEW question is what happened? Should we undo the name server changes I made (as you indicated on Feb 3) AND/OR should you undo whatever it was you did on the WP end just before you asked me to do that.
    Whew!
    Thanks

  • on January 8 I merged our 2 WordPress accounts using the duplicator by following these WP Forum instructions

Okay, this would be unrelated to any WordPress.com issues because it would have been done entirely on your self-hosted site with GoDaddy.

My NEW question is what happened? Should we undo the name server changes I made (as you indicated on Feb 3) AND/OR should you undo whatever it was you did on the WP end just before you asked me to do that.

I think we need to back up a little here. Are you looking to have your site hosted through GoDaddy? Or through WordPress.com? You have domain mapping and other upgrades set up here at WordPress.com. But from what it sounds like, you had a perfectly functional site at GoDaddy.

If you want to have a site here at WordPress.com, it will not be with the Tempera theme. As that is not available. And you will need to export the 26 pages that have already been made and import them into your WordPress.com site using these instructions:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-from-wordpress-org

If you would like to continue using your GoDaddy hosted site, we will need to undo everythign you have set up here at WordPress.com. As there is no connection between WordPress.com and a self-hosted site on a different webhost.

    Does that make sense?
