I have a .com purchase via wordpress.com. Domain registered mapping done?

  • Unknown's avatar

E.g. regarding transferring from .com to .org, I need to ensure I have gone through registering a domain name and domain mapping.

I have purchased milkthepigeon.com through wordpress.com. I assume that means I have a domain name, yes? What about domain mapping?
How do I find out more detailed info, e.g. PHP 5.2.4 or greater and MySQL 5.0 or greater?

Just figuring out basic info re. transferring. Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Simply having your own domain name does not change the blog itself, and it is still hosted at wp.com, so you don’t have access to the backend of things (php, etc.)

Same Rules Apply – The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service.

New URL’s – If you add domain mapping to an existing blog with posts, their URL’s will change. We’ll redirect any visitors looking for the old URL’s over to the new ones, so none of your visitors will get lost out there on the internet, but other services won’t always understand that the old links and the new links point to the “same” place. For example, Tweet counter widgets work based on particular URL’s, so old posts’ counts will be reset to 0. Once you make the change, future posts will not be affected.

  • Domain mapping is included with our domain registrations, and http://milkthepigeon.com/ is currently mapped to milkthepigeon.wordpress.com

We take care of PHP and MySQL for you, so you don’t have to worry about such things here.

If you require wordpress.com support assistance in redirecting the correct blog, you can email them at support [at] wordpress.com.

I’ll also tag this for staff attention.

So in order to have the same current .com (milkthepigeon.com) I need to re-purchase the domain via bluehost or one of wordpress’s hosts?

  • Well, you still own the domain.

Do you mean that you want to direct the domain to another hosting provider?

If so, you can by changing your domain’s nameservers: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#update-nameservers

Edit: can someone provide me with the support link re: paying a fee to have your blog transferred to the .org to prevent me a headache? :) Thanks

  • Sure, we’ll be re-opening our Guided Transfer option on August 9th, and you’re welcome to purchase that via the Store section of your Dashboard when it’s available again.
