I have a domain purchased elsewhere that goes to my wordpress.com site, but…
-
So, I purchased themysteryhour.com through 1and1.com. That address goes to themysteryhour.wordpress.com. So, I can put http://www.themysteryhour.com in the address bar and it goes there, but it then changes to themysteryhour.wordpress.com.
I would simply like to get rid of the “wordpress” once it gets to the site. I can link without it, but when someone else links, they copy and paste from the address bar with “wordpress” still in it. I would like for it to not do that.
I’ve read about domain mapping, but haven’t seen an answer for this question.
Thanks!

Domain Mapping is the answer to the question. :)
You can map your existing domain following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Once you have your domain mapped with the nameservers set properly as illustrated in the guide above (your domain is currently mapped, but the nameservers are not directed to us), wait a few hours for the nameserver changes to propogate to the various ISPs and then set your primary domain via Store -> Domains in your blog’s Dashboard.
Your blog’s domain will be displayed as whatever you set for primary via Store -> Domains, but please do wait a few hours after the nameserver change before setting your primary domain.
When a domain is registered or altered, there is a process called propagation, where information about the domain name is passed to internet service providers all over the world. This process can take up to 72 hours (though usually much less). During that time, you may also receive a warning message in your browser about “redirect errors”. Unfortunately, we have no control over this as it all depends on how often your internet service provider updates their records. Please rest assured that everything is proceeding normally with your domain.

Domain forwarding is not the best solution – use Domain Mapping $ 13.- / year
