I have a domain with one company and a website with another. Looking to stage a transfer

I’m an author. My domain is owned by GoDaddy and my website is through Wix. I want to create a private WordPress site to re-do my website and then transfer to WordPress. What’s the best way to do this? I was thinking I should transfer my domain from GoDaddy to WordPress first, making sure that the WordPress domain still points to the Wix site.

Related to this, is there an issue with the name I use. For example, let’s say for discussion purposes, my current website is ‘bestseller.com’. Can I call my private website ‘bestseller.wordpress.com’ and then drop the wordpress once I start paying wordpress for hosting services? (This will match what I currently have.) Or do I need to call it something else (like ‘authorbestseller.wordpress.com’) and then can I change it when I drop the wordpress?

  • Hi there,

Generally speaking we recommend that you get your site set up here on the “WordPress.com” URL and get it to the point that you are ready to “launch” and then at that time you can transfer your domain over to us.

This will allow you to assign the domain to your new WordPress.com site, and it will seamlessly replace the Wix site.

In the meantime, to move your content over from Wix by following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-from-wix/

You don’t need to have your wordpress.com address match the final URL, they are not at all related to one another. I do recommend picking a name that is similar though. One thing to be aware of is that if an address is taken in our system, there is no way to reclaim or recycle the address, even if the site is an older one that is not in use.

That is the case with bestseller.wordpress.com, which is already claimed by someone else in our system. With that in mind you may need to pick something close, like bestsellercom.wordpress.com or bestsellersite.wordpress.com.

But as I mention they are not connected to one another (the domains are totally independent) so no matter what WordPress.com address your site uses, not to worry, in the end you can set your site to any custom address you wish.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Okay, this is a problem for me. My domain is registered with GoDaddy. My site is with Wix. Your answer tells me I should import my information first. The link you provided is telling me I have to transfer the domain first. It won’t let me import my Wix information until I transfer the domain name (or leave it where it is and select another one).

I own my domain. I want to keep that domain and just transfer everything to WordPress.

I’d also like to keep my current website active until I make the transfer.

  • Hi there,

There’s no need to transfer your domain to move your data from Wix to WordPress.com. Just go to the Importers page (https://wordpress.com/import/), select the Wix importer, enter the site’s address, and proceed with the import. It won’t ask you to transfer your domain.

Thank you. I have successfully imported my other site. Oddly, though, I’m now trying to edit pages and I’m unable to move things, unable to change font sizes. unable to change spacing, nothing. And when I can change it, I update the page and then click “view page” and nothing has changed.

I am looking up all the ways to edit, it just doesn’t seem to be an option with what’s been imported, as if the formatting is partially locked.

  • What’s a page you’re trying to edit so I can have a look and further assist you?

Also, have a look at how our Block editor works:

Tonight was the first chance I’ve had to work on it. I imported all of my data from another site, as you know. I worked with the Block Editor and I made a lot or progress on the Home page. However, I am unable to change fonts and font sizes and when I’m working on it, it takes it looking askew on the home page to make it look somewhat okay on the preview page.

  • Hi there,

When it comes to fonts, websites work a bit differently from word processors, and it’s not easy, for example, to use multiple different fonts in the same page, or even the same website. In fact, in WordPress it’s nigh-impossible – the way WordPress themes work you typically have only two fonts: a heading font, which is used for all headings, and a base font, which is used for content. Whichever fonts you choose will be applied to all content on all pages on your site, and you cannot use a third font for a specific paragraph on a specific page.

You can change the font-pairs for your site from inside the editor, here:

    https://d.pr/i/X2J4Xa

The reason you can’t change font size is because you’re adding all your content inside the Classic Block, rather than using the appropriate blocks for the different types of content you’re using. The Classic Block mimics the behaviour of the old classic editor that was removed from the WordPress software just over two years ago, and that editor did not include any way to change font size for text.

But the block editor has that option, and it’s tied to specific blocks. For example, if you use the paragraph block for text content, you’ll have an option there to change both the color and size of the text in that block, as well as the line spacing:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/paragraph-block/#typography

I want to encourage you to switch that classic block to regular blocks instead – that will give you a lot more control over both the formatting and layout of your content. To do that, click inside the content, and click this button:

    https://d.pr/i/cuGpGD

That should also allow you to fix the paragraphs that have different font sizes at the moment.

(The reason you’re seeing the front page text in different font sizes at the moment is because you copied in this content from somewhere else, causing some existing HTML code to be copied into your page along with it. Normally fixing that would require editing the code directly to remove the copied-in code, but switching to paragraph blocks should also allow you to fix this using the block settings.)

When I click convert to blocks, it gives me everything in HTML code. Not what I expected

Please look at the first two sections (the first two books) of the page you looked at before. Is that what you mean? Also, I have no idea how one is stretched across the page and one isn’t (and why I can’t seem to line them up), but I’m guessing these can be modified.

  • Hi there,

That does not sound normal, You were working on a specific page or post when you saw that? If so what is the title of the page you were working on, or the URL of the page you are seeing the code on.

You are referring to your homepage? I noticed that on the homepage you are using the “Media & Text” block to place a picture and copy next to each other. One thing I noticed about the first one is that it is contained within a “group” block. This is making it narrower than the “Media and Text” block below, which is not held within a group.

To make the first section wider like the second one, you will need to “ungroup” it. This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to do it.
