I have a registered domain and hosted site but…

  I’m not sure how to go about “timing” the transfer to WordPress. I would like to work on the new WordPress site until its ready to publish. Does that mean I have to leave the old site hosted (and up) until I’m ready to publish? And if so, how should I name my temporary blog?

  Hi,

  Assuming you mean you want to transfer to WordPress.com: yes, it’d be much better to leave the old site in place until the new one is ready.

  If you’ve signed up for WordPress.com you’ll initially have a blog address like mynewblog.wordpress.com. Use that while you test and transfer content. Once it’s ready you can arrange the necessary upgrades to transfer your domain name so it points to the new site instead of the old.
