There is no content lost when you domain map. All that changes is the URL and nothing else. Domains – Important Notes Before Upgrading
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgradingYou must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades.
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase.
As you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog. See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

So if I wanted to use godaddy or bluehost or something I would just get a domain name and host it from there? Then I would have to pay for the mapping thru the wordpress store and just map it to the new domain I have created?

What is your ultimate goal?
When you purchase a domain URL you pay for it annually.
When your purchase a domain mapping upgrade you pay for it annually.
The two are separate renewals at two different places if your purchase the domain URL from a different source rather than from WordPress.com.
When you own a domain and have domain mapping in place and later choose to move to self hosting then you redirect the nameservers to the new site and keep paying for the domain mapping annually.
Or you transfer the registration to a different registrar and pay them for both. -
I just am trying to figure out how to do it. I am very new to all this and not for sure what it all means. My ultimate goal is to just have my blog at .net and basically still be running the same blog. My blog also doesn’t allow me to use plugins I am not for sure why?

Because it is WordPress.com. WP.com is a turnkey blogging solution designed to be easy to use and very secure. If that’s what you want, follow the instructions above to buy a custom domain and mapping.
If you’d rather be responsible for all your own tech support, upgrades, and security, buy hosting at $120 a year and up, and install software from WordPress.ORG. Then you can use plugins.
