I have an extra account that I want to delete (not just have it sit there inactive)

  The ‘delete account’ instructions do not say how to do this – they only say how to make an account inactive and delete blogs.

  Unfortunately, that’s the only way to leave WordPress.com permanently. Delete any WordPress.com site that you might have – https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/

  Remove all personal information from your account, including changing the username to a random string, at https://wordpress.com/me/account

  Remove personal information and hide your profile on Gravatar –
  http://en.gravatar.com/support/profile-privacy

  Change the password to something random and change the email address to a disposable email address from a site like http://www.20minutemail.com/.

  Unsubscribe from the emails sent to you from WordPress.com – https://wordpress.com/me/notifications
