I have built another blog: redirection
-
Hi, I’ve jut bought a domain and a space on a server, and I built my personal worpress blog. Now I would like that myname.wordpress.com blog will redirect to my new http://www.mydomain.com.
Is is possible? Thanks! -
There isn’t any official way of redirecting your viewers to your new self-hosted blog. What I did was to remove all posts from my .com blog, and put one final post which told people I had moved, and giving them a link to the new blog. This worked pretty well for me and is really the only way that I know of.

Hi – I’m interested in doing this too. If I do as you suggest, does that mean starting again with Google? my myname.wordpress.com blog gets high results in Google at present, so is there a way I can tell Google that it’s the same blog at a new address?
-
Yes, it means starting over from scratch on search engines and Technorati as well. The ONLY way around this is to buy the domain name upgrade and start using it from as early as possible here. That way when you move, you take the name and all the juice with you.

Cool thanks. And – stupid question, but – if you buy the domain name here, you can use it when you leave wordpress.com and port it to your wordpress.org blog, or any other platform?
-
You have to wait something like 60 days before moving it again, but yes. BUT everything I said applies to using your new URL. You lose SEO and Technorati status and start over from zero. This is why it’s best to make that switch very early in a blog’s life. Also, your internal links to whatever.wordpress.com will ALL have to be rewritten when you leave WP. While you’re still here they will all work. When you move, they go poof.

This is really useful information, thanks so much for your help raincoaster and thesacredpath.

If you don’t mind buying the domain mapping you can do as explained here: http://blog-well.com/2008/01/27/wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg/
