I have lost my categories

  When i logged in my dashboard to modify some categories, i found out that most of them were missing. In particular, almost all of my child categories are gone!
  The funny thing is that in the blog’s menu the categories are showing up just fine (i have a custom menu with category pages).
  The last thing i did before this happened was to use the wordpress android app to change some categories’ names.
  How can i recover the categories in my dashboard? Any help is greatly appreciated…
