I have lost my website

  • Unknown's avatar

I was writing a blog on my website. When I went to add a picture, I found that I was in a defunct formerly owned website, Bobby Cat and Friends. When I went to change sites, my only two choices were Bobby Cat and Friends and the Unintentional Vegan. Both of these sites are defunct.

I don’t know what happened? Was my website hacked or is this a system failure of some sort?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Unknown

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Something is really messed up. I posted that I needed help with https://lifewithautismorg.wordpress.com/ and this somehow got changed to a defunct website, Bobbycatandfriends.wordpress.com

I can still visit https://lifewithautismorg.wordpress.com/ to see all of my blog posts but when I click on my sites, all I get are two old defunct sites that I have long since discontinued.

  • Howdy,

The issue is that the WordPress.com user account you are posting from is not the owner or admin of the site you are trying to access. This typically happens when you’ve ended up with a second WordPress.com user account and that second account is the one that owns the site. You’ll need to log into THAT user account in order to make any changes.

If you do not have access to that second account, here are a few options:

    Account recovery overview – https://wordpress.com/support/account-recovery/
    Lost password tool – https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword
    Account recovery form – https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=recovery

Let us know if anything is unclear or you have any further questions.

Thank you for your reply. I don’t know how I’m supposed to prove ownership because this was a free site. The only thing I can think of is that my name and photographs of me are on this site. I’m very clear on this site that I teach Culinary Arts at Laughlin High. I can provide a link to Laughlin High and if you pull down the staff menu, you’ll see my name and picture listed as the Culinary Arts instructor.

Alternatively, if I upgraded to a paid site, would it be possible to have the content from my old site transferred? I could literally copy and paste the contents but that would take hours especially since I’d have to reload all of the pictures that were used.

I still don’t understand what happened or why. I launched this site last April and didn’t have problems until yesterday.

  • Hi, we are not able to help here in the support forums, as verifying account ownership requires us to ask you to provide info that is best not shared in this public venue.

With this in mind, please fill out this form here to the best of your ability: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=recovery

This will send all the info you have to our account recovery team, and from there they will contact you directly to assist you in regaining access to the account that owns the site you are trying to access.

    Thanks!

Unfortunately the form can’t be submitted without proof of a transaction, activation key, or an authentication code. Is there any other way to contact the account recovery team?

I’m really sorry to have caused this much trouble. It never occurred to me to set up an authentication code because I never anticipated anything like this happening.

  • Hello there,

Unfortunately the form can’t be submitted without proof of a transaction, activation key, or an authentication code. Is there any other way to contact the account recovery team?

If a purchase has been made, a transaction ID is proof of ownership. This can be found on the statement of a card charged: https://en.support.wordpress.com/billing-history/#retrieving-a-transaction-id

It appears to me that you can easily access the correct site by logging out of this davidwchin account and logging back in with the correct username chindw and the correct password.

Unfortunately I trusted my computer to remember my password. When I somehow got into a defunct site and tried to find my lost site (lifewithautism), I put in a request for a lost password and the new password keeps talking me back to the old Bobbycat site.

QUESTION: If I upgrade to a paid plan would wordpress transfer the contents from my old site to the new one?

I haven’t committed to starting a paid site yet because I wouldn’t want to have to start this site from scratch. It’d be easier just to let everything go as a painful lesson about the importance of having backup info regarding user name/passwords.

What’s ironic is that I’ve done this with most other sites. I don’t know why I didn’t with this one.

  • Hi there,

If I upgrade to a paid plan would wordpress transfer the contents from my old site to the new one?

The only way to transfer the content will be to regain access to the account. We would not move a site from one customer to another (without verification) regardless of upgrade.

Unfortunately the form can’t be submitted without proof of a transaction, activation key, or an authentication code. Is there any other way to contact the account recovery team?

To clarify, there is a recent transaction on the account that owns lifewithautismorg.wordpress.com. Is it possible that you recall other sites on that account which you might have upgraded?

On our account recovery form you will be asked to provide a transaction ID for your purchase as one option to verify you are the account holder. Even in the event that you have lost access to your email for that account (to send yourself a password reset) you still check with your credit card company since the transaction info you would need can typically be found on your credit card statement.

More info on how to find that here: https://wordpress.com/support/billing-history/#retrieving-a-transaction-id

HAH! I’m back in! It turns out that when I logged into my computer via google chrome, google chrome had updated to a newer version. The system asked if I wanted to update to the new profile. I said yes but in so doing, chrome dropped one of my 3 gmail accounts. This turned out to be the account that I had been using to get into my life with autism wordpress account.

One of the disadvantages to being autistic is that I’m extremely literal. A few days passed and since it had now been a week since I had written a new blog at my site, I logged into Chrome and was given a binary choice of two email accounts. I should have noticed that the account I had been using was missing but since I didn’t I was trying to use my main account to access wordpress.

I didn’t pick up on this until one of your earlier responses about using the right email address clicked in. At the time I read your reply, I couldn’t imagine what you were talking about because OF COURSE I was using the right email account.

I woke up at 2:30 AM with an epiphany. I was missing an account.

I did a google gmail recovery, got access, and was subsequently able to access the account.

    THANK YOU!

We have the same issue :( I tried mine here in Dubai since I’m based here but when I tried using VPN, it is working. Now, I guess, we have to change the THEME.

  • @jennysantua08, since this is a different issue from the one in the original post, could you start a new topic here?
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

You can add a “modlook” tag if you’d like to get staff attention.

Specifically we have reports of blocked sites in your region, and we would like to investigate this separately to avoid confusion. Thanks!

Thanks and sorry for the confusion!
