I have my pages all mixed up. How do I create and change parent pages?

  • Unknown's avatar

I renamed my Home page and can’t get it back so all the stuff that is on it is in limbo. I can’t figure out how to make parent pages that show up. I’ve managed to get to of the 3 parent pages I have linked and can’t unlink them. I’m about ready to just start over.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi!

Happy to help – let’s take this one step at a time.

I renamed my Home page and can’t get it back so all the stuff that is on it is in limbo.

Your current homepage is set to display your latest WordPress.com posts. It’s an automatically generated page. You won’t see it under your page list here:

    https://jspinnerdotnet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page

We automatically create it and set it to display your latest posts. Are you looking for a different front page filled with “static” (unchanging content)?

I can’t figure out how to make parent pages that show up.

By “show up”, do you mean the pages that are listed in your menu here?

THANK YOU! I’m going nuts trying to figure this out. I like that my stuff is posted one at a time but when you go to read it just scrolls through them as they were posted. Now I can’t make that happen except for the default page. I did figure out how to set that but not how to change where old stuff is showing up. Do I have to change the default every time I want to post to a different parent page because I see no place to set that when I make a new post. I haven’t even tried fooling with how to get pages to show up. That is a mystery how they get where they end up. I won’t even go into what I’ve been doing to get things to at least show up.

    Please see below!

I like that my stuff is posted one at a time but when you go to read it just scrolls through them as they were posted.

Correct – your homepage will display all of your posts with the newest ones at the top and the oldest ones at the bottom. Currently, you’ll see the full post on your homagepage meaning that for longer posts like “Do You Want to Save Those Changes?”, the reader could read everything from their homepage.

Some writers prefer to have just a portion of their post shown on the homepage and then a link to read the full post. If you would like to set that up, instructions to do that can be found here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

Give it a try and let me know what you think!

I did figure out how to set that but not how to change where old stuff is showing up.

If I understand correctly, you’re looking for a way to allow readers to access older posts. Correct?

There are a few ways to do that:

    1. Currently, you have infinite scroll turned on. This just means that as a reader scrolls down your front page, we’ll continuously load more and more posts for them. You could actually scroll your front page all the way to your very first post!

    2. We could put an Archive widget on your sidebar:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/archives-widget/

That would present readers with a month by month snapshot for your posts. If they clicked on April 2015 for example, they would see all of April’s posts from oldest to newest (just like how your homepage is setup).

I hope that answers your question! Please let me know if not!

I basically understand the home page. Except Rain seems to be stuck to the top of the page because it has remained there despite newer posts. I can’t figure out where the place is to unstick it. Other than that it is the other pages I can’t do anything with. I can’t post on them, order them, or make new pages that show up in the nav bar on the sidebar. How do I make new pages that show up? I don’t even know why A Million Tries landed under Searching for Grace but Searching for Grace doesn’t show up as a default posting option when I go to that function.

So, the only choice I have about the order of my posts on the home page is by date published and I would need to republish everything to change the order?

Here is what I’m trying to do; I’m trying to make a page for blogs and another page for poetry. I would REALLY like to be able to put my poetry in a particular order or make separate pages under poetry for different themes. I’d love to get my blog posts back to the order they were just a few days ago, before I started fooling around with this. Is there any way to do that without losing all the new posts since early last week? I had wanted poetry to be the home page is how that age title got there, I know how to change that but I can’t make a new poetry page that will show up in the nav bar so I left the title on the home page for now. I know that’s confusing, I AM confused and frustrated. Your replies have helped a lot. I’m not feeling quite so hopeless about this. I was going to upgrade but once this happened and I couldn’t fix it, it looked like I might abandon WordPress and try something easier but, like I said, you have helped a lot. IF I get this straightened out and I feel optimistic that I won’t be spending days and days fooling around and not writing again I will upgrade. Either way, thank you very much.

I basically understand the home page. Except Rain seems to be stuck to the top of the page because it has remained there despite newer posts. I can’t figure out where the place is to unstick it.

The top post on your site right now appears to be Day By Day on my side as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/10Oae

Is that not what you’re seeing on your side? That seems to be the latest post on your site.

Regarding your end goal of having poetry on a different page, let’s tackle that first. I think everything will become a bit clearer once we’ve done that!

The basic goal is to have two different pages – one full of blog posts and the other full of poetry. Eventually, you would like to have the poetry page split up by types of poetry as well.

In order to accomplish this, we’re going to use categories and category pages. Think of a category like a sub-group of posts. You already have several categories setup here:

    https://jspinnerdotnet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category

Each time you create a new category, we automatically create a new page for that category. For example, you’ll find all of your posts in the Poetry category here:

    http://jspinner.net/category/poetry/

We automatically create this page for you so it’s not something you would need to do on your end.

So, your poetry is listed on this page:

    http://jspinner.net/category/poetry/ (under the category “Poetry”)

Your blog posts can be found here:

http://jspinner.net/category/blog-posts/ (Under the category “Blog Posts”)

Now, we need to make those pages visible to your readers and put them on your sidebar here:

    http://d.pr/i/1cSuW

To do that, follow these steps:

    1. Start on this page:

    https://jspinnerdotnet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php

We’re going to create a new menu.

    2. Click the link for “Create a new menu” at the top of the page as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/1lpHB

Enter whatever you would like as the title “Menu 2” will work. Then, click the blue “Create Menu” button.

    3. Now, let’s add two “pages” to that menu; one for poetry and another for blog posts.

    4. On the left-hand side of the page, click “Categories” as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/Kpky

You’ll see “Poetry” and “Blog Posts” as well as “Home”

    5. Check the boxes next to “Poetry” and “Blog Posts”. Then, click Add to Menu.

    6. Click “Save Menu”

    7. Go to this link: https://jspinnerdotnet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php?action=locations

    You’ll see the following:

    http://d.pr/i/1jtPV

    8. Next to “Primary Menu”, choose Menu 2 (the menu we just created) from the list and click “Save Changes”

After those steps, when you visit your page, you should see two links on your sidebar – one for Blog Posts and another for Poetry. Can you let me know once you’ve completed those steps?
