I have questions on archives and email subscriptions
-
Hi — I am probably being dense, but I am having trouble figuring out how to make sure people can subscribe to my blog by email and in how to limit the number of posts displayed (I’d like to keep a month up and have the rest be in archives). Can you tell me how (or shoot me the link to the right support documents)? Thanks for your help.

The easiest way to do this is to drop the Follow Blog widget on your sidebar:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/
This widget will display a follow button for WordPress.com users and an email form for non-WordPress.com users.
You can place it on your sidebar here:

in how to limit the number of posts displayed
Just to be clear, you’re referring to the front page of your site, correct? If so, there are two changes you’ll want to make here:
https://laughingbearpress.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php
First, set the option for “Blog pages show at most” to the number you want to have displayed on your homepage.
Second, uncheck “To infinity and beyond,” which causes your posts to automatically load as you scroll down the page.
Can you give that a try?

Thank your Jeremy for your prompt help — that worked. One more question — I am considering changing themes — will these widgets and settings carry over automatically or will I have to reset in the new theme?

The settings should carry over. The widgets might not due to some discrepancies with how different themes handle widgets. However, if you switch themes and the widgets don’t carry over, you should see them on your Widgets page under the heading “Inactive.” So, you should just have to drag and drop them back into place (shouldn’t have to set them up again).
